Take Control of Your Career in Health and Safety

Starting Your Health and Safety Career with an NVQ

If you're already working in a health and safety support role and want a recognised qualification that reflects what you actually do day to day, the NVQ Level 3 in Occupational Health and Safety is one of the most accessible ways to formalise that experience — without stepping away from your job to study.

How the NVQ Level 3 Is Structured

Like other NVQs, the qualification is built around a portfolio of evidence from your own workplace, assessed against a set of mandatory and optional units.

Mandatory Units

  • Taking responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Developing procedures to safely control work operations
  • Monitoring procedures for safely controlling work operations
  • Promoting a culture of health and safety in the workplace
  • Conducting a health and safety risk assessment of the workplace

Optional Units (choose two)

  • Investigating and evaluating health and safety incidents and complaints
  • Ensuring workplace actions support environmental protection
  • Reviewing health and safety procedures in the workplace
  • Supervising the health, safety and welfare of a learner in the workplace

Building Your Portfolio

Throughout the qualification, you'll build a portfolio that showcases what you've learned and how you've applied it — supported by a personal tutor and course materials. There's no exam; instead, the qualification is awarded once your portfolio demonstrates that you meet the required standard across all units.

Where It Can Take You

The NVQ Level 3 is a strong foundation for anyone looking to take on more responsibility for health and safety within their organisation, and for those with their sights on more senior qualifications — such as the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice — later in their career.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a health and safety job title to start this NVQ?

No — but you do need a role where you can generate genuine evidence for the units, such as carrying out risk assessments or contributing to safety procedures as part of your normal work.

How long does the NVQ Level 3 take?

Like other NVQs, it's flexible — most candidates complete it within six to twelve months, depending on their pace and workload.

What comes after the NVQ Level 3?

Many candidates go on to NEBOSH qualifications for broader knowledge-based learning, or progress towards the NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice as their experience grows.
