IATP & CPD Approved Asbestos Awareness

Asbestos is a very hazardous substance. It has the potential to cause serious ill health to any one who disturbs it. Just a small level of asbestos exposure can increase a person’s risk of developing an asbestos-related disease such as lung cancer and malignant mesothelioma.

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 state that training is mandatory for anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos fibres at work, and this covers a long list of professions indeed (see below). Responsibility lies with employers to ensure that such employees, or anyone who supervises those employees, gets the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others. The HSE recognise online learning as a viable delivery method for asbestos awareness training.

Training must satisfy the requirements of Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the supporting Approved Code of Practice L143 ‘Managing and working with asbestos’. This AITP Asbestos Awareness course online is accredited by both the IATP and CPD and reviews as ‘Excellent’ by learners. So you can be reassured it meets legal requirements.

Important Note: This online asbestos awareness course does not allow you to knowingly disturb asbestos. Employees who plan to undertake work which will knowingly disturb asbestos require more detailed training not covered in this awareness course.

Why is this Training So Important?

Studies have shown that exposure to asbestos may increase the risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma (a relatively rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen). Although rare, mesothelioma is the most common form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure.

In addition to lung cancer and mesothelioma, some studies have suggested an association between asbestos exposure and gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers, as well as an elevated risk for cancers of the throat, kidney, esophagus, and gallbladder. However, the evidence is inconclusive.

Asbestos exposure may also increase the risk of asbestosis (an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs that can cause shortness of breath, coughing, and permanent lung damage) and other non-malignant lung and pleural disorders, including pleural plaques which are changes in the membranes surrounding the lung, pleural thickening, and benign pleural effusions which are abnormal collections of fluid between the thin layers of tissue lining, the lungs and the wall of the chest cavity. Although pleural plaques are not precursors to lung cancer, evidence suggests that people with pleural disease caused by exposure to asbestos may be at increased risk for lung cancer.
