CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) is the plant operator card scheme most principal contractors expect to see on site, issued by NOCN Job Cards and recognised under CSCS. Cards are awarded per machine category, so you are only tested on the machines you actually operate — telescopic handler (A17), 360 excavator (A58/A59), forward tipping dumper (A09) and ride-on roller (A31) among them. Most operators start on the red Trained Operator card. It is valid for two years, worked under supervision, and does not renew as a matter of course — the route forward is a Plant Operations NVQ Level 2, which upgrades you to the blue Competent Operator card, valid five years and renewable by retest.
