Where the role sits
Lifting operations under LOLER require a competent person to plan them. On site that is generally the Appointed Person. Beneath them, the Crane Supervisor controls the lift as it happens and the Slinger Signaller attaches and directs the load. All three roles need covering, but only the Appointed Person carries responsibility for the plan itself.
Is this the right course for me?
The Appointed Person course assumes real experience of lifting operations — it is not an entry qualification. If you are new to lifting, Slinger Signaller comes first, then Crane Supervisor. Appointed Person suits people already supervising lifts who are moving into planning them, or contracts managers who need to hold the role formally.
Why does the lift plan matter?
Most serious lifting incidents trace back to planning rather than operation — the wrong crane for the radius, ground that could not take the outrigger loading, a load whose weight or centre of gravity was assumed rather than established. The Appointed Person's job is to settle those questions before anything is lifted, which is why the role carries the responsibility it does.
