IOSH Working Safely is a one-day course for employees at any level, in any sector. It covers personal responsibility, the hazards people actually meet at work and why safety matters, without assuming you manage anyone. It is the course organisations use to bring a whole workforce to a consistent, recognised standard.

What it covers

The content is deliberately practical and pitched at anyone, whatever they do. It is about recognising risk and knowing what to do about it, not about law or paperwork.

Assessment and certification

Working Safely is assessed by a short multiple-choice test and a practical hazard-spotting exercise, both completed as part of the course rather than afterwards. There is nothing to take away and submit, which is one of the reasons it works for whole-workforce training. Successful learners receive an IOSH Working Safely certificate, which carries no expiry date and can be verified online by an employer or client.

Working Safely or Managing Safely?

This is the distinction that causes most wasted spend in the IOSH range. Working Safely is one day and written for people who do not manage others. Managing Safely is three days and written for people who do. When a client or a pre-qualification questionnaire asks for IOSH-trained supervision, they mean Managing Safely, and a Working Safely certificate will not satisfy it. Train the workforce with this one and the supervisors with that one.

Common questions

How long is IOSH Working Safely?

One day in a classroom or virtual classroom. Studied as self-paced e-learning it typically takes a few hours and can be split across several sessions, which suits shift patterns and large groups.

Will Working Safely satisfy a client asking for IOSH training?

It depends what they asked for. If they want evidence that the workforce has been trained, yes. If they asked for IOSH-trained managers or supervision, no, and you need Managing Safely. Worth checking the wording of the contract before booking a whole team onto the wrong one.

Does it expire?

No. IOSH certificates carry no expiry date. Many employers repeat Working Safely periodically as part of ongoing training for new starters and to keep awareness current, but there is no renewal requirement and no refresher course for it.

Is it the same as a CSCS or site card?

No. Working Safely is a general workplace course and does not give site access. Construction site entry is governed by the CITB Site Safety Plus schemes and CSCS cards, which are a separate system entirely and do expire.

Is the e-learning certificate the same?

Yes. Classroom, live online and self-paced e-learning all lead to the same IOSH Working Safely certificate. What differs is the pace, the cost and how much support sits around you.
