The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board sets the training standards for engineering construction – power generation, oil and gas, chemicals, nuclear, water treatment and process plant. Its training splits into two things that get confused. There is the safety passport that gets you through the gate, and there are the work-based diplomas that prove you are competent at the job once you are inside. Most people working in the sector need the first. Trades building a career need both.

Which route do you actually need?

Go for a Safety Passport if

A client or principal contractor has made it a condition of site access, which on engineering construction sites is the norm rather than the exception
You are new to the sector and need to be compliant before you can start
Your existing card is approaching its three-year expiry and needs renewing
You supervise a team and need Leading a Team Safely on top of the passport

Go for a diploma if

You need to prove occupational competence in your trade, not just safety awareness
You are already doing the work and want the qualification that recognises it
You would rather be assessed on real site work than sit an examination
You are building towards a competence card or a supervisory position

Who these courses are for

Anyone working on an engineering construction site – mechanical and electrical trades, riggers, erectors, scaffolders, pipefitters, welders, instrument technicians, and the supervisors and engineers alongside them. The Safety Passport applies regardless of trade, which is the point of it: one card, recognised across the client base, rather than a separate induction for every site.

There are no formal entry requirements for the Safety Passport or the renewal, so you can book either directly. The diplomas work differently: because they are assessed on real work, you need to be in a role that actually generates the evidence.

Renew before your card expires

The one-day renewal only works while your existing passport is still valid. Once it has lapsed the renewal route closes and the full two-day course has to be repeated. Check your expiry date if you are not certain when yours runs out – it is a common and entirely avoidable cost.

Renewal and test only

The one-day renewal covers updates and reassessment. Some providers also run a shorter test-only option for candidates who need reassessment rather than retraining.

On site for groups

Delivered at your own premises where you have enough delegates, which removes travel and keeps the team together. Worth pricing up from four people upwards.

Workplace assessment

How the diplomas are delivered. An assessor works with you remotely, gathering evidence from your normal duties with site visits where the qualification calls for them.

Common questions

Is the CCNSG Safety Passport the same as a CSCS card?

No. They are separate schemes for different sectors. CSCS covers building and civil engineering sites; the CCNSG Safety Passport covers engineering construction – refineries, power stations, chemical plants and similar. Holding one does not give you the other, and people who work across both sectors generally carry both.

How long does the Safety Passport last?

Three years from the date of issue. Renewal is a one-day course taken before the card expires. Diary it early: the renewal route depends on the existing card still being valid.

What happens if I let my passport lapse?

The one-day renewal is no longer available to you and the full two-day course has to be taken again. That is twice the time off site and roughly twice the cost, which is why the expiry date is worth tracking.

Do I need Leading a Team Safely?

Only if you supervise people. LATS is a one-day course covering the safety responsibilities that come with running a team, and it sits on top of the Safety Passport rather than replacing it – you need a current passport to take it, and you keep both.

Is CCNSG accepted instead of another safety passport scheme?

Not automatically. Several passport schemes operate in industry and clients specify which they accept. Check what the site actually asks for before booking, particularly if you are moving between sectors.

Are the ECITB diplomas the same as an NVQ?

They do the same job – proving occupational competence through workplace assessment rather than examination – but they are awarded by ECITB for engineering construction occupations. If your work sits on the building and civil engineering side instead, the construction NVQ range is the equivalent route.
