CCNSG Leading a Team Safely (LATS)

Leading a Team Safely, usually shortened to LATS, is a one-day ECITB workshop for supervisors and team leaders on engineering construction sites. It builds on the CCNSG Safety Passport rather than replacing it, and you must already hold a valid passport to attend.

Who it is for

This course suits you if

You supervise or lead a team on an engineering construction site
You are a chargehand or team leader who has moved up from the tools
A client has asked for supervisors to hold LATS as well as the passport
You are responsible for how a job is planned and briefed, not just how it is done

Before you book

You must hold a valid CCNSG Safety Passport on the day and bring it with you
If your passport has lapsed, renew it first or you will not be admitted
It does not replace the passport and does not extend its expiry date
Bring photo ID and your National Insurance number as you would for any CCNSG course

What the day covers

LATS is built around four elements, and it is deliberately run as a workshop with discussion rather than a lecture, because most of what goes wrong in team safety is about how people talk to each other rather than what the rules say.

The Team: your responsibilities as a leader, and how your behaviour sets what the team treats as acceptable
The Plan: thinking a job through before it starts, and briefing it so people actually understand it
The Job: managing the work as it happens, including what to do when conditions change
A Good Job: finishing safely, reviewing what happened and feeding it back

Assessment and your LATS card

The day is delivered as classroom sessions with a multiple-choice question paper at the end. Successful candidates receive a LATS safety passport issued directly by the ECITB, valid for three years. It sits alongside your CCNSG Safety Passport as a separate card rather than replacing it.

Two cards, two expiry dates

This catches supervisors out. Your LATS passport runs for three years from when you complete this course, and your CCNSG Safety Passport runs for three years from when you completed that one. They will not usually expire together, and renewing one does nothing for the other. If you supervise a squad and hold both, track them as two separate dates, because a lapsed CCNSG card stops you getting on site regardless of how current your LATS is.

Common questions

Do I need a CCNSG Safety Passport before LATS?

Yes, and it must be valid on the day. LATS extends the standard passport for people in supervisory roles rather than standing on its own. If you do not hold one, book the two-day Safety Passport first.

Does LATS renew my CCNSG card?

No. They are separate cards with separate expiry dates. To keep your safety passport current you still need the one-day CCNSG Renewal before it expires.

Is LATS the same as SSSTS?

No. Both are one-day supervisor courses, but they belong to different schemes and different sectors. LATS is the ECITB course for engineering construction. SSSTS is the CITB Site Safety Plus course used on building and civil engineering sites. A supervisor working across both sectors may need each of them.

Supervisors, team leaders, chargehands and site managers on engineering construction sites, and anyone about to step into one of those roles. It assumes you already have the underlying safety knowledge from the passport and focuses on leading other people safely.
