CCNSG Safety Passport Renewal

The CCNSG Renewal is the one-day course that extends an existing safety passport for another three years. It exists so that card holders do not have to repeat the full two days, and it comes with one hard condition: it has to be sat before the current card expires.

Assessment and your new card

The day is classroom based and assessed by 60 multiple-choice questions, set either as a single 60-question paper or as two papers of 30 depending on the provider. Successful candidates are normally issued a temporary safety passport on the day, valid for six weeks, with the full card sent out by the ECITB afterwards. The new card runs for three years from your existing card's expiry date, not from the date you sat the course.

Renewing early costs you nothing

Because the new card is dated from your current expiry rather than from the course, renewing six months early gives you three and a half years before you are back here. There is no advantage whatsoever in leaving it late, and a real risk in doing so: dates in industrial areas fill up around shutdown seasons, and running out of options in the final fortnight is how people end up unable to work.

Miss the date and the renewal closes to you

If your card expires before you renew, you are no longer eligible, whatever the reason and however recently it lapsed. The only route back is the full two-day national course: twice the time off site and roughly twice the cost. Providers are generally strict about this and bookings made without an in-date card are not usually refunded.

Common questions

How early can I renew?

Up to six months before your card expires. Nothing is lost by going early, because the replacement card runs from your existing expiry date rather than the course date.

My card has already expired. Can I still renew?

No. Once the expiry date has passed, neither the one-day renewal nor the test-only route is available and you must retake the two-day CCNSG Safety Passport course. There is no grace period and no discretion on this.

Is there a test-only option?

Yes. The CCNSG Test-only for Renewal is a single 60-question computerised test at an approved centre with no taught day, and an 80% pass mark. It is quicker, but no teaching or assistance is given, so it suits people confident of passing cold. Not every provider offers it.

What do I need to bring?

Your current CCNSG card, photo identification and your National Insurance number. The trainer will want to see the card at the start, so if it has been lost, sort a replacement out before your course date rather than turning up without it.

Can I renew with a different provider?

Yes. Any ECITB-approved provider that delivers the two-day course can offer the renewal, regardless of who ran your original passport. What matters is that your current card is valid, not where you obtained it.
