NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK)

NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction is the construction-specific NEBOSH qualification. It replaced the withdrawn National Certificate in Construction Health and Safety, and from March 2023 it was raised to SCQF Level 7 so that holders qualify for the CSCS Academically Qualified Person card, whose criteria had changed.

Unit CN1 runs to 13 elements, applying health and safety management to the realities of construction, from CDM duties through to the hazards that cause most harm on site.

• The foundations of construction health and safety management, including CDM duties and the roles of the duty holders
• Improving health and safety culture and assessing risk
• Managing change, procedures and contractors across a project
• Excavations, demolition, and mobile plant and vehicles
• Work at height, lifting operations and the hazards that cause most construction fatalities
• Occupational health risks in construction, including lung disease, noise and vibration
• Managing health and safety performance data, and the use of technology across the project lifecycle

Assessment and certification

There is one unit, CN1, assessed by a scenario-based open book examination taken digitally. You have 48 hours to access, complete and submit your paper, starting at 11am UK time on the examination date, and NEBOSH expects the work itself to take considerably less than that. A closing interview follows, confirming the submitted work is your own. The provisional pass mark for CN1 is 45%. The qualification is standalone, which means units achieved on other NEBOSH qualifications cannot be used towards any part of it. It sits at SCQF Level 7 with 12 SCQF credit points, comparable to RQF Level 4 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and holders are entitled to Associate Membership of IIRSM, using the letters AIIRSM.
