Van Elle Construction Training
CPCS, NPORS and NRSWA Plant and Streetworks Training in Nottinghamshire
Van Elle Construction Training is a plant and streetworks specialist based at Kirkby in Ashfield, covering CPCS and NPORS operator categories, the lifting-operations roles from slinger signaller up to appointed person, and the full NRSWA streetworks units. This is card-and-ticket training for people operating machines and working in the highway, rather than classroom safety management.
Lifting operations — CPCS
The lifting roles in sequence: Slinger Signaller for attaching and directing loads, Crane Supervisor for controlling the lift on the ground, and Appointed Person for planning it. Plus A17 Telescopic Handler at novice level and A17A for experienced workers. See all CPCS courses.
Plant operation — NPORS
Telescopic handler, MEWP boom, industrial counterbalanced forklift, forward tipping dumper, plant machinery marshal, abrasive wheel with practical cutting, and safe working at height with harness and fall arrest. NPORS cards are widely accepted and the practical assessment is on the machine rather than in a classroom.
Streetworks — NRSWA
Streetworks Novice and Refresher, Unit LA CAT & Genny for locating underground services, and Unit O1/S1. Anyone working in the public highway needs a streetworks card, and the units required depend on the work — signing and guarding differs from excavation and reinstatement. See all NRSWA courses.
Site safety and first aid
CITB SSSTS and its refresher, Health and Safety Awareness, and SMSTS Refresher. QA Level 3 First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work, plus a QA Level 2 Award in Fire Safety.
CPCS or NPORS — which card?
Both are recognised operator schemes and both are accepted on most sites, but not all. CPCS is CITB-run and tends to be specified on larger principal contractor sites; NPORS is often quicker and cheaper to obtain and is widely accepted in utilities, agriculture and industrial settings. Check what your client actually requires before booking — the training is comparable but the card is not always interchangeable.
Slinger, supervisor or appointed person?
These are three distinct roles in a lifting operation and a site needs all three covered. The slinger signaller attaches the load and directs the crane. The crane supervisor controls the lift as it happens. The appointed person plans it and takes responsibility for the lift plan. Training one person in all three is common on smaller sites, but the roles remain separate duties on the day.
