Classroom-Based NRSWA Training for Operatives & Supervisors
The Signing, Lighting and Guarding course trains you on how to set out signs, cones, barriers and traffic lights. This training course is conducted on a street works site in line with the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 (NRSWA).
This NRSWA Unit 1 course (was NRSWA Unit 2) runs for one day and is suitable for street works operatives or supervisors. Delegates will learn how to operate and position traffic equipments amongst other tasks. The knowledge gained will allow you to confidently carry out highway works and protect yourself and others around you.
If you are a street works supervisor, you will be monitoring the set up and take down of a site. Upon completing this course, you will have the skills to lead a team and manage their safety.

Signing, Lighting and Guarding Course Content
The course will cover the following units through practical and classroom-based learning:
Operatives Unit 1:
- Safety of workers and the general public when carrying out street works
- Maintaining the free movement of pedestrians and traffic whilst working
- Complying with the restrictions of work
- Safe working practices
- The layout of barriers, warning notices, lamps, signs etc
- Special measures – road closure, traffic diversion, portable lights
- Operating and positioning portable traffic lights and equipment
Supervisors:
- Plan out a site with exact distances and dimensions in line with the relevant legislation
- Making developmental decisions and producing a recommendation for action from a site plan
- Monitor the surveying, setting up and taking down of a site
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, you will have the relevant knowledge of your role’s legal requirements. In addition, you will follow the procedures to ensure that you supervise/operate a site correctly.
What is Required to Pass the Signing, Lighting and Guarding Course?
The course contains both theory and practical elements. The trainer delivers the theory element in a classroom, but the course is majority practical based. The trainer will assess your ability to conduct practical exercises effectively.
