What is the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course?
Our CITB SMSTS Refresher course is delivered by our in-house qualified and experienced course instructors. The course will bring your health and safety knowledge up to date including with regard to current legislation and familiarise you with current best practice within the construction industry.
This two day health and safety course is designed for managers who are responsible for the; planning, organising, monitoring and controlling of operatives on a construction site.
CITB Accreditation
The SMSTS Refresher course is provided for those delegates who have previously completed the CITB SMSTS course successfully. It is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and recognised by BuildUK as meeting the required standard for all construction site managers working on BuildUK sites.
On successful completion of this course you will receive a certificate from the CITB that will be valid for 5 years. In order to remain certified however, you will need to retake the SMSTS refresher course again before the certificate expiry date.
Who Should Attend the SMSTS Refresher?
The SMSTS Refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day SMSTS or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided to the training provider of their eligibility.
If a delegate cannot provide a copy of their certificate, the online card checker can be used to establish if a delegate currently holds a valid SMSTS certificate.
If an individual cannot be located on the system and no evidence of their certificate can be found, they will have to attend the full SMSTS course.
Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme.
Delegates must be competent in English at site supervisor level.

The CITB SMSTS Refresher course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.
Course Content
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) is a two-day course for delegates who have previously passed the full Site management safety training scheme (SMSTS) course or subsequent refresher course, and can provide proof of attendance.
It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up-to-date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course provides an opportunity to revisit the wide range of topics from the previous five-day course.
Course Aims
The refresher course aims to help site managers to:
Improve awareness of recent developments in construction, legislation and health, safety, welfare and environmental issues
Identify measures that will assist the practical implementation of responsibilities established by new legislation and working practices
Implement new guidance and industry best practice
Consolidate their understanding of responsibility and accountability for site health, safety, welfare and the environment.
Assessment & Examination
The paper consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course. The exam must be taken at the end of the course.
Each exam paper has:
- 18 multiple choice questions (each worth one mark)
- 7 questions in multi-response or short written answer format (each worth two marks)
- The two mark questions all relate to the seven health and safety focus areas. The higher marks recognise and reward the increased complexity of the question and response required.
The seven health and safety focus areas are founded on construction ill health, injury and fatality statistics:
- Working at height
- Vehicles/pedestrians
- Manual handling
- Asbestos
- Dust
- Noise
- Vibration
The exam pass mark is 81% (26 out of 32).
The exam lasts for 35 minutes and must be completed within this time under exam conditions. Delegates are permitted to use the Construction site safety – The comprehensive guide (GE700) publication and the Construction site management delegate workbook (XA6) for the last 15 minutes of the exam.
On successful completion of the SMSTS course and associated assessment candidates will be awarded the CITB: Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) certificate. This certificate will remain extant for five years after which the SMSTS refresher course must be undertaken in order for individuals maintain qualification for a further 5 years.
Accreditation & Recognition
The SMSTS refresher course is accredited by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) as part of the Site Safety Plus course suite and recognised by BuildUK as meeting the required standard for construction site managers working on BuildUK sites.
On successful completion of this course you will receive a certificate from the CITB that will be valid for 5 years. In order to remain certified however, you will need to retake the course before the certificate expiry date.
Prerequisites
Only those delegates who have successfully undertaken a SMSTS course or subsequent SMSTS Refresher course are eligible to attend this training course. As a result all delegates are required to hold a valid SMSTS certificate and will need to provide evidence of this to the training provider.
Delegates should also note that this refresher course must be attended prior to the expiry of an existing certificate else they will be required to re-enter the scheme by successfully completing the full SMSTS course.
The minimum entry requirement for the SMSTS course is a good understanding of spoken and written English.
Further Studying and Progression
Possible further study may in include the NEBOSH Construction Certificate or Construction NVQ.
