An NVQ proves you can already do the job. There is no syllabus to sit through and no exam to revise for — you build a portfolio of evidence from work you are doing anyway, and an assessor measures it against the national standard. How an NVQ works

Four things separate it from a taught course. Worth understanding before enrolling, because the wrong candidate on an NVQ is an expensive mistake.

You must already do the work

An NVQ assesses competence in a role you currently occupy. It cannot be studied in advance of the job, and a candidate not performing the work has nothing to evidence.

Evidence, not answers

Site records, photographs, method statements, witness testimony and professional discussion — gathered from real work and mapped against the units of the qualification.

An assessor, not a tutor

A named assessor reviews your portfolio, gives feedback and signs off each unit. Depending on the qualification they may need access to your workplace as well as your evidence.

Months, not days

Most candidates take several months to a year, set by how quickly evidence accumulates rather than by a timetable. Providers set a completion window — check it before enrolling.

For supervisors, site managers and those running contracts. These are the qualifications most often required for a black or gold card.

Getting the level right

The most expensive mistake on an NVQ is enrolling at the wrong level. Card schemes require a specific qualification rather than an NVQ in general, and a Level 3 will not satisfy a requirement written for a Level 6.
