The qualification is designed to train people as supervisors to recognised industry standards. It is aimed at those in work or those who are looking for recognition of their prior learning and experience.
Learners who achieve this qualification can use it to gain employment, to advance in the sector, or to work towards another qualification (see Progression).
The primary purpose of this qualification is to confirm the learner’s occupational competence as a work supervisor. As a competence-based qualification, it will provide confirmation to employers and industry managers, and to card schemes, that someone who holds the qualification has the skills and knowledge needed to meet the nationally-recognised standard to carry out the role.
The qualification is assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence. The assessor can work alongside the learner to confirm that they have met the requirements of the qualification and that they are therefore competent in their role.
Learners prove their competence by being observed by the assessor as they carry out their normal work activities competently and to the industry standard. They will also show that they are complying with currently legislation and company procedures.
The assessment process will ensure that the learner can:
- interpret the instructions correctly
- select the appropriate resources for the task
- complete tasks within the given timescales and specifications

As this is a competence-based qualification, learners will be acquiring the knowledge and skills required through on-the-job experience.
To achieve the whole qualification learners need a minimum of 67 credits and must complete five mandatory units plus two optional units.

Recognition
ProQual - This qualification is supported by Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS).
CPCS provides a registration card scheme acknowledged by industry for those involved in plant operations. The scheme recognises skills, knowledge and understanding, competence and qualifications.
Apprenticeships
This qualification is a mandatory component in the Construction Technical Apprenticeship.
Progression
Learners may progress from the Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision to a range of qualifications, including the NVQ Awards at Level 4 and 6 in Construction Contracting Operations or Construction Site Management.
The Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Occupational Work Supervision can lead to employment in the Construction industry, particularly when it is taken as a component of a Construction Technical Apprenticeship.
