Understand The Role And Responsibilities Of A First Aider

  • how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others
  • the need for consent to provide First Aid

Be Able To Assess An Incident:

  • conducting a scene survey
  • conducting a primary survey of a casualty
  • summoning appropriate assistance when necessary

Be Able To Provide First Aid To An Unresponsive Casualty:

  • when to administer Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • demonstrating how to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • how to administer First Aid to a casualty who is experiencing a seizure

Be Able To Provide First Aid To A Casualty Who Is Choking; When Choking Is:

  • mild
  • severe

Be Able To Provide First Aid To A Casualty With External Bleeding:

  • the severity of external bleeding
  • demonstrating how to control external bleeding

Know How To Provide First Aid To A Casualty Who Is In Shock:

  • recognising a casualty who is suffering from shock
  • how to administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock

Know How To Provide First Aid To A Casualty With Minor Injuries:

How To Administer First Aid To A Casualty With Minor Burns And Scalds:

  • learners will know how to deal with minor burns and scalds in line with accepted current practice as outlined in the Voluntary Aids Society First Aid Manual.

Methods of Assessment

The method of assessment is a two-step journey:

This will be assessed by 60 multi-choice questions, either two 30 question tests or one 60 question test.

Step 1. Practical Observations

andidates will be observed to ensure that they can:

  • Conduct a scene survey
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Summon appropriate assistance when necessary
  • Identify when to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Demonstrate adult CPR using a manikin
  • Conduct a primary survey of a casualty
  • Identify when to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate how to place a casualty into the recovery position
  • Demonstrate continual monitoring of breathing whilst the casualty is in the recovery position
  • Identify when a casualty is choking
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty who is choking
  • Identify whether external bleeding is life-threatening
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid to a casualty with external bleeding
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a head-to-toe survey
  • A support sling, and
  • An elevated sling
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury supporting a conscious casualty on their back, or
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty with a bystander, or
  • Demonstrate how to administer first aid for a casualty with a suspected spinal injury turning a casualty using a log roll
  • Demonstrate the use of a ‘training device’ adrenaline auto-injector

Step 2. Multiple Choice Exam

The examination consists of 40 multiple-choice questions.

  • The pass mark for this examination is 28 correct answers.
  • There is a maximum time limit of 60 minutes.
