What's Included in the IOSH Managing Safely Course?

The IOSH Managing Safely course is an ideal first step into health and safety management. It is a course that gifts highly transferable skills that apply in any industry, making it a highly sought after course for management personnel.

The IOSH Managing Safely course was developed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). This globally chartered body provides internationally recognised qualifications that promote high health and safety standards in the workplace.

Module 2 - Assessing Risk

• Definitions of the terms hazard-hazardous event-risk
• Definition of the term risk assessment
• Definition of the terms likelihood and consequence
• Risk assessment process and the risk rating systems
• The benefits of carrying out risk assessment

Module 3 - Controlling Risks

• Definition of the term reasonably practicable
• How to evaluate risk using a risk matrix and how to control those risks
• How to reduce risk by applying the hierarchy of risk control
• How implementing risk controls impact incident and consequences of incident
• Definition of the term residual risk
• Modules 2 and Module 3 include a practical activity to spot hazards, assess and control risk.

Module 4 - Understanding Responsibilities

• An overview of what the law requires an organisation to do to protect H&S of workers and other people under its control
• Definition of the term reasonably foreseeable
• The three knowledge tests to help determine reasonably foreseeable risks: common, industry and expert knowledge
• The difference between criminal law and civil law in relation to health and safety
• The possible outcomes of not working inside the law
• Where to find legal guidance

• Why leadership is an essential part of a health and safety management system

Module 5 - Common Hazards

• The six main hazard categories and how hazards can fall into more than one category
• Common hazards in the workplace, their effects and symptoms and how to manage them

• Reasons to investigate incidents
• The benefits of incident investigation

Module 7 - Measuring Performance

• What types of information performance indicators can help to improve safety and health in the workplace

• The two types of auditing: internal and external

Entry Requirements

The IOSH Managing Safely is open to everyone and does not require any prior qualifications or prerequisites. While the course is aimed at those in managerial and supervisory positions, experience in these fields is not necessarily required to take the course. This means applicants do not require any knowledge of health and safety prior to taking the course.

Exam Overview

You will be required to undertake a 45-minute multiple choice test, comprised of 30 questions. A score of at least 36 out of 60 is required to pass. You will also need to conduct and submit a skill-based workplace risk assessment within two weeks of completing your course material. You must pass both units to achieve your full IOSH Managing Safely certificate.

Does the IOSH Managing Safely certificate expire?

• No, the certificate doesn’t expire, however IOSH do recommend that you attend a IOSH Managing Safely Refresher e-learning course every three years.

Devices

All of our online learning courses have been developed to give the best learning experience on a desktop or laptop computer, but some of them can now be accessed on tablets, like the iPad or Samsung Galaxy Tab. There are a wide range of tablets on the market and although the courses should work on all of them, to get the best mobile experience we recommend a few things:

• A minimum screen resolution of 1024 x 600, with a recommended screen resolution of 1024 x 768 or higher.
• Generally the standard web browser is the best one to use, so on an iPad, for example, use Safari. You may also need to change a setting in the browser to allow cookies from 3rd parties (you definitely will with Safari).
