Who counts as a DSE user, how many workstations do you need to assess, and what does ‘adequate’ actually mean for each desk? The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 require employers to assess the workstation of every DSE user — anyone using a screen daily for continuous periods of an hour or more — and to act on what they find. This tool walks you through it and gives you the record to prove it was done.

It works two ways. In workstation mode, it guides you through the HSE checklist areas — display screen, keyboard, mouse, software, furniture and work environment — plus reported discomfort, breaks, eye-test entitlement and training, then flags exactly what needs fixing and produces a printable individual record. In organisation mode, enter your headcount and DSE-user numbers and it lays out your employer duties at a glance, including whether you’re legally required to record your findings.

Home and hybrid setups are covered throughout — the assessment duty applies to them just the same. It’s a self-contained file that runs in any web browser: nothing to install, no account, no subscription, no internet needed once downloaded. Yours to keep and re-run for every desk, every time something changes.

What it does

  • Guides you through all six HSE workstation checklist areas, marking each OK or an issue
  • Flags the specific action needed for every issue found, ranked by how urgent it is
  • Treats reported aches, pains or eye strain as a priority that needs acting on
  • Covers office, home and hybrid workstations — the duty applies to all three
  • Checks the wider duties: breaks and work pattern, eye-test entitlement, and user training
  • Rolls up your organisation-level duties, including the ‘5 or more employees’ recording rule
  • Produces a dated, printable assessment record with a built-in 12-month review date
  • Points users toward DSE training so they can set up and self-assess safely

Who it’s for

Office managers, HR and facilities teams, line managers, small-business owners and anyone responsible for DSE compliance — especially organisations with home and hybrid workers who need a consistent, recordable way to assess every setup.

How you get it

Instant digital download after purchase. A single HTML file — open it in any browser on a PC, Mac, tablet or phone. No software, no sign-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a completed DSE assessment on its own?

It structures and records the assessment, but HSE guidance is clear that a self-assessment alone is not a completed assessment — a competent person should review the findings, look at the workstation in use where practicable, and make sure the actions are carried out. This tool is built to support exactly that process and give you the documented record at the end of it.

Does it cover home and hybrid workers?

Yes. The DSE Regulations apply to home and hybrid workstations just as they do to the office, and the tool covers all three. You can mark a workstation as office, home or hybrid, and the guidance adjusts — including home-specific points such as trip hazards from trailing wires.

Do I have to record my DSE assessments?

If you employ five or more people, you must record the significant findings of your risk assessments — the tool flags this in organisation mode and gives you a printable record per workstation. With fewer than five employees recording isn’t legally required, but keeping the records is strongly advised so changes can be reviewed later.

Do I need to install anything or be online?

No. It’s a single self-contained file that runs in any modern web browser. Once downloaded it works completely offline, with no software, account or subscription, and you can re-use it for as many workstations as you need.

Is it based on official guidance?

Yes. The checklist and duties follow Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance under the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992. It is not endorsed by or affiliated with the HSE or any other body — it’s an independent tool built on published guidance. For specific or complex situations, take advice from a competent health and safety professional. You can find DSE training courses here.
