NEBOSH Working with Wellbeing

NEBOSH Working with Wellbeing is a one-day, Award-level qualification addressing health and wellbeing at work rather than physical safety. It is built around NEBOSH's wellbeing tree, and it ends with you producing an intervention plan for your own organisation rather than sitting an exam.

Who it is for

This qualification suits you if

  • You have responsibility for wellbeing as well as, or instead of, safety
  • You work in HR, occupational health or health and safety and wellbeing has landed with you
  • Your organisation is being asked about wellbeing provision by clients
  • You want to build a wellbeing plan rather than run isolated initiatives

Before you commit

  • There are no entry requirements and no previous health and safety knowledge is assumed
  • NEBOSH recommends a standard of English equivalent to IELTS 5.0 or higher
  • The assessment is about your own organisation, so you need to know it well enough to judge its strengths and weaknesses
  • It is an Award-level qualification and complements rather than replaces certificate-level training

What it covers

The syllabus is built around three elements and the NEBOSH wellbeing tree, which frames wellbeing through six areas rather than treating it as a single vague quality.

  • Foundations of wellbeing: what the word actually means at work, and why it matters commercially as well as ethically
  • The branches of wellbeing: interaction, exercise, mindfulness, nutrition, kindness and learning, and what each looks like in practice
  • The benefits of getting it right, including lower absence, reduced staff turnover and higher productivity
  • The factors that push wellbeing up or down in a workplace
  • Interventions in the workplace: choosing them, planning them and measuring whether they actually worked

Assessment and certification

There is a single practical assessment in two parts, taking around an hour in total. First you reflect on your own organisation's strengths and weaknesses using the NEBOSH wellbeing tree. Then you develop an intervention plan addressing the weaknesses you identified, justifying each choice and explaining how you would evaluate whether it worked. It tests whether you can apply the learning in a real workplace rather than recall it. Results are issued within 24 working days, and the qualification parchment normally follows within 20 working days of the unit being confirmed.

Wellbeing or stress?

These two sit next to each other and answer different questions. Working with Wellbeing is the broader, more positive one: what good wellbeing looks like across six areas and how to build a plan around it. The HSE Certificate in Managing Stress at Work is narrower and more clinical, dealing with work-related stress as a risk arising from how work is designed and managed. If absence and grievances are the problem, start with stress. If you are building a wellbeing programme, start here.

Common questions

How long is Working with Wellbeing?

NEBOSH sets a minimum of six hours' study with a recommendation of a further hour for the assessment, so around seven hours in total. Taught in a classroom or virtual classroom it fits into a single day. Studied online you can split it across several sessions.

How is it assessed?

By a practical assessment in two parts, taking about an hour. You assess your own organisation against the NEBOSH wellbeing tree, then build an intervention plan for the weak areas, justifying your choices and setting out how you would measure the effect. There is no examination.

What is the wellbeing tree?

NEBOSH's framework for the qualification. It breaks wellbeing into six areas — interaction, exercise, mindfulness, nutrition, kindness and learning — so that an organisation can assess itself against something concrete rather than debating what wellbeing means. Your assessment is built directly on it.

How does it relate to IOSH Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing?

IOSH Managing Occupational Health and Wellbeing covers similar ground from the IOSH side and is aimed at managers. The two overlap, and which suits you often comes down to which awarding body your organisation or client recognises. Both are short compared with certificate-level qualifications.

Does it replace a health and safety qualification?

No. It is an Award-level qualification addressing wellbeing specifically, and it sits alongside rather than instead of a general qualification such as the NEBOSH General Certificate or IOSH Managing Safely.
