NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation

The NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation is a one-day qualification developed jointly with the Health and Safety Executive. It teaches a structured way to investigate non-complex incidents so that the lessons actually get learned, rather than the same thing happening again six months later.

Assessment and certification

Unit INV1 is assessed by a practical exercise of approximately 60 minutes, completed at the end of the course and based on a hypothetical incident. You are given evidence to work from, including witness interview material, and assessed on your ability to review it, evaluate what each account is worth and produce an action plan to prevent recurrence. It is a test of method rather than memory. Results follow within 24 working days, and the qualification parchment normally within 40 working days of the unit being confirmed. Resits can be arranged through your Learning Partner. The qualification is not accredited by a UK regulator, but has been credit rated by Qualifications Scotland at SCQF Level 6 with one credit point, comparable to RQF Level 3 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Not for experienced practitioners

NEBOSH is explicit that this qualification covers non-complex incidents, and providers generally advise that it is not suitable for people already working as health and safety practitioners. How long is the Incident Investigation course?

NEBOSH sets seven notional hours for teaching and assessment, plus around three hours of pre-course reading beforehand. That fits into a single day face to face, including the 60-minute assessment at the end. NEBOSH requires attendance for the full day.

What does the assessment involve?

A practical exercise of about an hour, based on a hypothetical incident. You work from the evidence provided, including witness interview material, then evaluate it and produce an action plan to prevent recurrence. There is no written exam and nothing to revise in the usual sense.
