Course Duration

No prior testing experience is required, though a basic knowledge of RPE helps.

• Why face fit testing is needed and what the HSE requires
• Types of RPE and how they work, tight-fitting against loose-fitting
• COSHH, INDG 479 and HSG 53
• Qualitative against quantitative fit testing
• Limitations and suitability of different mask types
• Maintenance, record keeping and troubleshooting
• The legal responsibilities of testers and employers

Practical

• Setting up a qualitative face fit test step by step
• Sensitivity solution screening and taste threshold
• Running a full fit test with Bitrex or Saccharin
• Donning, doffing and the test exercises
• Real-time coaching on technique and delivery
• Recording, feedback and documentation

Assessment

An end-of-course practical assessment.

Certification

A PGL Midlands Certificate of Competence in Face Fit Testing, in line with Fit2Fit, INDG 479, HSG 53 and BSIF recommendations. Note this is a provider certificate: the trainers are Fit2Fit accredited, but the course itself is not a Fit2Fit-accredited scheme. It is a strong foundation if you intend to pursue Fit2Fit certification.

Renewal

Refresher training is recommended every two to three years, or sooner following changes to legislation, RPE type or test protocols.

Good to Know

The course covers qualitative testing only — the taste-based method used for disposable FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3 masks and half-face reusable respirators. Quantitative testing using equipment such as a Portacount, required for full-face RPE, is not included. Face fit testing is legally required under COSHH wherever tight-fitting RPE is used, and is implied by the asbestos, confined space and lead regulations.
