US Driving Lessons and Online Drivers Ed

Coastline Academy is a driving school operating across eight US states, offering behind-the-wheel lessons with certified instructors alongside state-approved online drivers education courses. It has grown partly by acquiring established local driving schools rather than starting from scratch in each area.

These are United States courses. Drivers education and licensing are regulated state by state in the US, and none of this applies to a UK driving licence or DVSA theory and practical tests. Relevant if you are learning to drive in California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Texas or Washington.

Online drivers ed by state
State-approved courses covering the classroom component of licensing, taken online at your own pace. Each state sets its own curriculum and hours, so the California course is not interchangeable with the Texas one — you need the course approved for the state issuing your licence. Texas additionally offers a parent-taught option, and Washington runs livestream classroom sessions from several locations.
Completion is reported to the state
The practical advantage over a generic online course. On completion your details are entered directly into the state DMV database, so you can sit the written test and collect a permit without submitting paperwork yourself. This only works because Coastline holds individual state licences — California E2115, Colorado 9906, Texas C3371, Illinois 9505, Washington 25014847 and others. Uncertified online courses do not count toward state requirements.
Behind-the-wheel driving lessons
In-car lessons with certified instructors, typically sold as packages — the most common being three two-hour sessions. Free pickup and dropoff is offered in most states, from home, school or work. Availability and package pricing vary by city, so the location search on the provider's site is the place to check what is offered near you.
Teen or adult driver?
The route differs. Teenagers in most states must complete a set number of drivers education hours before a permit or licence is issued, which is what the standard drivers ed courses cover. Adults learning later, or moving from another country, often face different requirements — Illinois and Texas both run separate adult courses for exactly that reason. Check your state's rules before buying, since the wrong course will not satisfy the requirement.
Why Washington costs more
Worth understanding before the price surprises you. Washington requires teen drivers education to include live classroom instruction and in-car training with a licensed instructor — it cannot be satisfied by a self-paced online course. The livestream format keeps the live teaching but removes the travel, which is why it costs several hundred dollars where self-paced courses in other states cost tens.
Traffic school and ticket dismissal
California traffic school is a separate product from drivers ed, taken by licensed drivers to keep a moving violation off their record or reduce insurance impact. Eligibility is set by the court that issued the citation, not by the school — confirm you are eligible before enrolling.
Safety and vehicle standards
Cars carry a second instructor brake, are marked as driving school vehicles and are inspected by a certified mechanic. Every car has a dashcam recording inside and out. Instructors undergo independent background and drug screening, and do not run errands during lessons.
