PADI Scuba Diving Certifications from Open Water to Divemaster

PADI is the largest recreational diver training organisation in the world, and its certifications are recognised at dive centres everywhere. The range here runs the full progression — from Open Water Diver for complete beginners, through the specialty courses that extend what you can safely do underwater, to Divemaster at professional level.

Core certifications
Open Water Diver is the entry qualification and the one that lets you dive independently with a buddy to 18 metres. Advanced Open Water builds on it with five adventure dives including deep and navigation. Rescue Diver is the step most divers describe as the hardest and most rewarding — managing problems, assisting others and preventing incidents rather than only looking after yourself.
Specialty courses
Enriched Air (Nitrox) for longer no-decompression times, Deep Diver, Night Diver, Wreck Diver, Drift Diver, Underwater Navigator, Search and Recovery, Boat Diver, Dry Suit Diver, Sidemount, Diver Propulsion Vehicle, and Peak Performance Buoyancy — the one experienced divers most often say they wish they had taken earlier.
Professional level
Divemaster is the first professional rating, qualifying you to guide certified divers, assist instructors and supervise activities. It requires Rescue Diver, EFR certification and a logged dive minimum beforehand, and it is a substantial commitment rather than another weekend specialty.
Conservation and first aid
Dive Against Debris trains divers to survey and remove marine litter and report the data. Emergency First Response CPR & AED covers primary and secondary care — it is a prerequisite for Rescue Diver and a genuinely useful qualification out of the water too.
Where do I start?
Open Water Diver, with no prior experience needed beyond reasonable health and basic swimming ability. After that, most divers take Advanced Open Water to extend their range, then Enriched Air and Peak Performance Buoyancy as the two specialties with the widest everyday benefit. Rescue Diver is the natural next step for anyone diving regularly.
