The Safety Maintenance Company
CITB Site Safety, PASMA Towers, Asbestos and First Aid at Two Centres
The Safety Maintenance Company runs the complete CITB Site Safety Plus range alongside PASMA tower training, UKATA asbestos awareness and first aid at all levels, from centres at Ilkeston in Derbyshire and Leeds in West Yorkshire. Both venues carry an identical range, so the choice is purely about travel. Four of the CITB courses also run live online with an instructor for anyone who cannot reach either centre.
CITB Site Safety Plus — the full range
SMSTS and the SMSTS Refresher, SSSTS and the SSSTS Refresher, plus Health and Safety Awareness as the entry card — all at both centres. Carrying both refreshers as well as the full courses matters: the refresher route is only open before your existing card expires, and a lapsed card means sitting the full course again. See all CITB courses.
Directors, temporary works and environmental
The Directors' Role for Health and Safety covers the duty carried at board level rather than on site — uncommon in most centre schedules and increasingly asked for in tender responses. Temporary Works Coordinator covers the role BS 5975 expects to be formally appointed on sites using falsework, propping or excavation support. SEATS covers site environmental awareness. All three run at both centres.
Live online instructor-led option
Four courses run live online with an instructor as well as in the classroom: Health and Safety Awareness, SEATS, the SMSTS Refresher and Temporary Works Coordinator. The card issued is identical — CITB recognises the online delivery of these courses — so this is a travel decision rather than a compromise on the qualification.
PASMA tower training
PASMA Towers for Users, Combined Low-Level Access and Towers for Users, and Towers on Stairways — all three at both centres. The stairways course is the notable one: assembling a tower on a staircase is a genuinely different build with its own stability problems, and a standard Towers for Users card does not cover it. Few centres run it.
UKATA asbestos awareness
UKATA Asbestos Awareness at both centres. This is Category A awareness training — it does not authorise anyone to work with asbestos, but it is the legally required training for anyone whose work could foreseeably disturb it, which covers most trades working on buildings constructed before 2000. It needs refreshing annually.
First aid — including mental health
Emergency First Aid at Work, First Aid at Work and First Aid at Work Re-qualification at both centres, alongside First Aid for Mental Health. Browse all first aid courses.
Which PASMA course?
Towers for Users covers standard mobile access towers and is what most operatives need. Combined Low-Level Access adds podiums and folding platforms for work under two metres — a separate competency that a Towers card alone does not cover. Towers on Stairways is its own qualification, worth taking only if stair builds are genuinely part of your work. The PASMA card is valid for five years in each case.
Ilkeston or Leeds?
Both centres run the same eighteen course types, so pick on journey time alone. Ilkeston sits between Nottingham and Derby, practical for the East Midlands and reachable from Sheffield and Chesterfield. Leeds covers West and North Yorkshire and is within reach of Bradford, Wakefield, Harrogate and York. If neither works, check the four courses available live online first.
