Course Overview
The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is a five-day course covering all relevant legislation affecting safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries.
It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture within the workforce.

Who Should Attend
This 5-day SMSTS course is for those who are considering, or already have, responsibilities for planning, organising, monitoring, controlling and administering groups of staff e.g. a site manager.
Course Objectives
To ensure the individual responsibilities are understood:
- why they are carrying out their identified roles
- what is expected of them
- how they contribute to the safety of the workplace.
At the end of the SMSTS course the delegates will be able to:
- understand the need to prevent accidents
- have an understanding of health and safety law
- identify how their role fits into the control and management of the site
- understand the need for risk assessments and method statements
- appreciate the need to perform safely and to stop and ask for advice if not sure
- report unsafe acts to prevent an accident.

At the end of the course you will have an understanding of:
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- Confined spaces
- Demolition
- Scaffolding
- Working at height
- Excavations
- Electricity
- Management of occupational health
- Behavioural safety
- Recent changes in accepted working practices
- Method statements and risk assessments
- Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations
Assessment
Assessment will be an exam paper and the completion of core exercises and a case study. The exam paper consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short written questions.
On Completion
Upon completing your course, you will be issued with a digital certificate which is valid for 5 years. This will provide employers with evidence that you have completed your course and know your duties as a site manager.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to take a SMSTS Refresher (SMSTS-R) course before the expiry date on your certificate.

For accredited courses a certificate will be sent directly to you from the appropriate awarding body.
