What is the CITB SMSTS Course?
The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) is the five-day Site Safety Plus course for people who plan, monitor, control and administer staff on construction sites. It gives site managers an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues and of the legal, moral and social duties that come with the role. The certificate is required for site managers working on Build UK sites.
Who is the SMSTS Course Suitable For?
New and existing site managers who want formal training on the nationally recognised CITB Site Safety Plus scheme, and experienced construction supervisors looking to progress into a management role.
What's Included in the SMSTS Course?
Five days of tutor-led training from CITB-accredited trainers with real industry experience, group tasks, home study and the end-of-course CITB examination.
Delivery Method
Classroom, starting at 8.30am, at the provider's training centre at Kingsley Place, Mote Road, Maidstone, Kent. Courses run either as five consecutive days or split across two weeks – check the dates shown against each option.
Course Duration
5 days (40 hours). Delegates must attend every session to receive a valid certificate.
Course Content
The course covers the occupational health and safety legislation affecting construction and civil engineering, and the Plan, Do, Check, Act cycle of health and safety management. Topics include:
- Health and safety law, including the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, and health and safety policies
- The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015
- Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements
- Site inspections and audits, and monitoring of safety and health
- Accident prevention and control, and RIDDOR
- Work at height and scaffold awareness
- Fire prevention and control
- Manual handling
- Site organisation and electricity on sites
- Demolition activities, asbestos and excavations
- Communication, consultation and managing contractors
- Plant and equipment, PUWER and LOLER
- Confined spaces
Assessment / Examination
Coursework and group exercises are assessed by the tutor throughout. On day five delegates sit a 30-minute multiple-choice paper that includes safety-critical questions.
Certification
Successful delegates receive a CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme certificate, valid for five years. It is renewed by taking the two-day SMSTS Refresher before it expires; otherwise the full course must be retaken.
