The CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) is the two-day renewal course for site managers and senior construction staff who already hold a valid SMSTS certificate. This version of the course is delivered online by a live instructor, so you can renew your qualification from home or the office without travelling to a training centre.
The refresher brings your construction health and safety knowledge up to date and provides a thorough overview of legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. It revisits the core areas of the full five-day course, including health and safety law, CDM Regulations, risk assessments and method statements, site set-up, occupational health and welfare, working at height, fire prevention, temporary works, plant and lifting operations, and site leadership.
Who should attend?
Site managers, project managers, contracts managers and senior supervisors who have previously passed the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course, or a subsequent refresher, and can provide proof of a valid certificate. The refresher must be completed before your existing certificate expires; once a certificate has lapsed, the full five-day SMSTS course is normally required instead.
Course content
The two-day programme covers four core areas: core legal and management responsibilities (health and safety law, CDM, risk assessments and method statements, leadership, inspection and audit, accident reporting); occupational health and workforce welfare (stress and mental health, COSHH, asbestos, noise, vibration, manual handling); safe site set-up and operational control (fire prevention, electrical safety, temporary works, plant, lifting operations); and high-risk activities (work at height, scaffolding, excavations, underground and overhead services, confined spaces).
Delivery and assessment
Training is delivered as a live online classroom with a live instructor across both days. You will need a laptop or PC with a webcam and microphone, and course materials are provided in digital format. Assessment is by continuous assessment plus the CITB-set exam, which includes 20 multiple-choice questions and 5 short written questions. The pass mark is 80% and all five safety-critical questions must be answered correctly. On successful completion, your SMSTS certification is renewed for 5 years.
Frequently asked questions
Am I eligible for the refresher? You must hold a valid, in-date SMSTS certificate (or subsequent refresher certificate) and provide proof of attendance before the course.
What happens if my certificate has expired? You will usually need to retake the full five-day SMSTS course rather than the two-day refresher.
Is the online version equivalent to the classroom course? Yes. The live-online course covers the same CITB syllabus, is delivered by a live instructor, and leads to the same CITB certification.
How long is the renewed certificate valid? Five years. Book your next refresher before it expires to stay in the scheme.
For short courses a completion certificate is available at the end of the course. You can screenshot this or print it out to confirm completion of the training.
For accredited courses a certificate will be sent directly to you from the appropriate awarding body.
