New York Life & Health Insurance Continuing Education
New York State Department of Financial Services approved online continuing education for life, accident and health producers. All courses are DFS-approved (Provider ID# NYPO-103305), with credits reported to the state at no extra charge.
New York CE Requirements
- Single line of authority: 15 hours of CE every two-year term.
- Holding both Life/Health and Property/Casualty: 30 hours, being 15 in each line — unless you take bridge-approved courses, in which case 15 hours can satisfy both.
- Newly licensed: no CE is required between initial certification and your first renewal. From the second renewal onward the full requirement applies.
Two Rules That Catch People Out
You can never repeat a course. Once a course has been completed for CE credit in New York, it can never be used again — not in a later term, not ever. Keep a record of what you have taken, because the responsibility for avoiding a repeat is yours.
Excess hours do not carry over. Unlike most states, anything above the 15 or 30 hours is simply lost at the end of the term.
Mandatory Topics Since April 2022
Licensees renewing on or after 1 April 2022 must include specific subjects within their hours: at least 1 hour of insurance law, 1 hour of ethics and professionalism, and 1 hour of diversity, inclusion and elimination of bias. The 15-hour review course below covers all three, as does the standalone 3-hour Law Update.
Annuity and Life Best Interest Training
Under Insurance Regulation 187, producers selling annuities or life insurance in New York must complete suitability and consumer Best Interest training. The 2019 amendment brought life products under the same regulation as annuities. It is a one-time requirement, and applies if you have not already completed it and intend to sell these products in or before your next licence term.
Long-Term Care Partnership
Selling New York State Long-Term Care Partnership insurance requires a one-time six-hour training course, and only the specific course offered through the NYS Department of Financial Services qualifies. No third-party equivalent is accepted, and non-residents must complete it regardless of their home state's rules.
Renewal, Deadlines and Reporting
Licences run two years and expire on your birth date, in odd or even years according to your birth year. Public adjusters are the exception, expiring 31 December in even-numbered years. Exams are closed-book, 70% to pass, unlimited retakes. Credits must be reported within 30 days of completion with your full licence number. Keep your original certificate.
Non-resident producers are exempt from the general requirement if their home state has a CE requirement and they remain in good standing there.
