Course Overview

This course updates the knowledge of delegates who have previously completed a non-licensed asbestos work qualification. It is aimed at trade operatives who carry out tasks with asbestos-containing materials, as described in HSE guidance HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’ and in line with Regulation 3(2) of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012.

Who needs the Non-Licensed Asbestos Work Refresher (CAT B) qualification?

Workers who need this level of information, instruction and training include all tradespeople who undertake tasks that may disturb asbestos and who have completed an initial non-licensed asbestos work qualification within the previous 18 months.

Why is Non-Licensed Asbestos Work Refresher training important?

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 require employers to ensure that employees who are liable to be exposed to asbestos receive adequate information, instruction and training. Refresher training keeps delegates able to put the necessary protective measures in place for themselves and others.

Course content is based on a training needs assessment and includes:

• Asbestos zones
• EM6 Personal protective equipment (PPE)
• EM8 Personal decontamination
• EM9 Disposal of asbestos waste
• Risk assessment and plan of work
• Emergency procedures

• Recognise why asbestos is dangerous
• Know the different types of asbestos and their properties
• Demonstrate knowledge of the uses of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials
• Demonstrate knowledge of asbestos-related legislation
• Demonstrate knowledge of the equipment and method sheets in HSG210 ‘Asbestos Essentials’
• Demonstrate knowledge of the task sheets for work with asbestos cement (AC)
• Demonstrate knowledge of the task sheets for textured coatings (TC) containing asbestos
• Demonstrate knowledge of the task sheets for safe work with undamaged asbestos materials
• Demonstrate knowledge of the fly-tipped waste task sheets
• Demonstrate knowledge of strictly controlled minor work on asbestos insulating board (AIB)
• Demonstrate knowledge of the removal and replacement of other asbestos-containing materials
