Recognise Asbestos and Stop Work Before It Is Disturbed

This half-day UKATA Asbestos Awareness course gives anyone whose work could disturb the fabric of a building the knowledge to recognise asbestos containing materials (ACMs) and avoid disturbing them. It is the recognised way employers meet the information, instruction and training duty in Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 (CAR 2012) for workers liable to be exposed and for the people who supervise them.

Asbestos is still responsible for thousands of deaths in Britain every year, and most of those people were exposed through everyday work such as drilling walls, lifting ceiling tiles or running cables. The course covers where asbestos is likely to be hidden, what exposure does to the body, and the single most important action when something suspect is found: stop work.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone whose work could disturb asbestos containing materials, including electricians, plumbers, gas engineers, joiners, plasterers, painters and decorators, roofers, shopfitters, telecoms and data engineers, demolition workers, surveyors, caretakers and maintenance teams, plus the supervisors and managers responsible for them. There are no entry requirements and no previous asbestos training is needed.

• Why it was used so widely and where it went
• Asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma and pleural thickening, and their long latency
• Why the risk is much higher for smokers

• The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and Regulation 10
• The duty to manage and the asbestos register
• Management surveys and refurbishment and demolition surveys
• Common locations of ACMs in buildings
• Why buildings built or refurbished before 2000 must be assumed to contain asbestos
• Recognising damaged or deteriorating materials

Methods of Assessment

Learning is checked throughout the session using photographs and material examples, followed by a short written check covering health effects, common locations and the actions to take on discovery. A UKATA certificate is issued on successful completion and is valid for one year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is asbestos awareness training a legal requirement?

Regulation 10 of CAR 2012 requires employers to give suitable information, instruction and training to anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos and to those who supervise them. No single course is named in law, but UKATA asbestos awareness is the widely recognised way to meet and evidence that duty.

How long is a UKATA asbestos awareness certificate valid?

One year. Annual refresher training is the expectation for asbestos awareness, and most principal contractors check the date at induction.

Does this course allow me to work with asbestos?

No. Awareness training teaches you to recognise asbestos and stop. Carrying out non-licensed work with asbestos containing materials needs Non-Licensed Operative training, and licensed work must be carried out by a licensed contractor.

Which buildings are likely to contain asbestos?

Any building constructed or refurbished before 2000 should be treated as containing asbestos until a survey confirms otherwise.
