Every year, almost 700,000 workers sustain non-fatal injuries at their place of work. Work-related illnesses are even more common, leading the pack at 1.6 million cases a year. Health and safety awareness is the first step towards cutting back those numbers. The CITB Health and Safety Awareness Course is designed to broach this complex issue and offer health and safety awareness training for workers and supervisors. It covers a wide berth of subjects, from individual safety responsibilities to fire prevention and legal liabilities.
Qualifying for Future Courses
The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course is the first qualification required to obtain a CSCS Labourer’s Card, which builds competency in the construction industry. Ultimately, your employees will learn to reduce the odds of construction site accidents, but the first step happens right here, with the CITB course. This one-day qualification serves an array of different work environments and responsibility levels, so even your management staff can benefit.
The course also prepares your workers for the other CITB Site Safety Plus courses, which qualify construction site workers for managerial promotions. If you’re hoping to turn your builders into Supervisors and your Managers into Directors, the CITB Health and Safety Awareness course will prepare the way.

HSA Course Structure
The CITB Health and Safety Awareness course attacks safety woes from a range of different angles, incorporating fire safety training, equipment usage, and working at height. It also outlines common construction hazards so that your workers can gain an understanding of their personal safety responsibilities. Management teams cannot carry the full weight of your site’s safety. Your employees must achieve a respectable level of awareness, so we’ll cover these important topics:
- The health and safety responsibilities your workers must fulfil on their own behalf. This leg of the course will also cover their responsibilities towards their co-workers. A team works best when every individual is looking out for those they work with.
- Common construction hazards and how they can be controlled.
- The legal and regulatory requirements of your worksite. We’ll also cover your liabilities as a contractor. By the end of the course, your staff will have a general understanding of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the repercussions of a failure to comply with it.
- How your staff can work together to improve on-site safety.
- Working safely at height. This will cover fragile surfaces, ladders, scaffold checklists, and roof work. Your workers will learn how to handle suspended access equipment and safety harnesses.
- Manual handling, which causes more than a third of all workplace injuries. We’ll teach your workers how to avoid work-related pain and other disorders. We’ll also cover occupational health strategies.
- Fire prevention. Construction site fires lead to millions of pounds of direct property damage annually, so we’ll train your workers to handle combustible elements safely.
- The safe handling of work equipment. Heavy equipment operators face a number of injury risks, whether from falling objects, improper lifting, or PPE failures.
The CITB course takes only a day. Your staff will begin training before 9:00 and finish at 16:30. We improve data retention by relying on interactive teaching techniques like open discussions, group work, and case studies. After completing seven hours, we’ll assess the results via a multiple-choice test. Upon passing, participants will receive a CITB certificate. The course can accommodate six to 16 participants and can be taught at the venue of your choice. It is also available as a remote training course.

It is also important to note that, many sites will not allow operatives to work on site without a valid, in date CSCS Card.

Funding
This HSA course is eligible for the CITB Training Grant Aid to those within scope.
Certification
A CSkills Certificate of Training will be issued to all those who complete the course to a satisfactory standard.
