City & Guilds 6160-08 – Working as a Member of a Rescue & Recovery Team in Confined Spaces in Exeter, Devon (Classroom)

Course Overview

The City & Guilds 6160 scheme is the water industry standard for confined space training. It was developed with input from every UK water company, so the training is consistent and recognised nationally.

This three-day Level 3 Award trains delegates to work as part of a confined space rescue and recovery team. It covers preparing for emergency operations, entering and exiting confined spaces safely, using emergency equipment and casualty recovery and handling devices to manufacturers’ specifications, and rescuing and recovering casualties while following procedures and working safely.

The course reflects the National Occupational Standard and applies to both water industry settings (potable water, sewage treatment, drain and sewer cleaning, and spaces at risk of flooding) and non-water settings such as petrochemical, pharmaceutical, construction, utilities, power, engineering and tunnelling.

Who Is It For?

Anyone who works in a confined space rescue and recovery team or as a technician on a standby rescue team. Delegates must already hold the City & Guilds 6160-03 Award in Working in High Risk Confined Spaces and must be clean shaven.

Delegates must be medically fit, aged 18 or over, and bring photo ID (a valid UK driving licence, passport or CSCS card). Full body harnesses are worn, and the working-at-height equipment has a safe working load of 136kg.

Classroom and practical training in Exeter, Devon, delivered by SSG Training & Consultancy in partnership with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service and Red One.

• Mobilising a rescue team and directing entry to and exit from the confined space

Assessment and Certification

Assessment is by practical observation and a written exam. Successful delegates receive a City & Guilds certificate.
