IATP Non-Licensed Asbestos Works Course in Ipswich, Suffolk

Course Aims & Objectives

This IATP course covers non-licensable work with asbestos and includes asbestos awareness. It provides the knowledge, understanding and skills needed by delegates who will knowingly disturb asbestos containing materials (ACMs) during their work. Successful completion allows delegates to undertake non-licensed asbestos work in accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 and the associated codes of practice.

Training is in accordance with Regulation 10 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, the Approved Code of Practice and guidance (L143), and Equipment and Method Sheet EM2 of Asbestos Essentials: a task manual for building, maintenance and allied trades on non-licensed asbestos work (HSG210).

Who Should Attend This Course?

Anyone who, in the course of their work, may be called upon to plan the works, interact with or remove ACMs that fall into the non-licensable categories. This includes building maintenance workers, supervisory personnel and building maintenance managers.

Course Outline

Before each course a training needs analysis is carried out so that the equipment and method sheets and task sheets covered are relevant to the delegates' work. By the end of the course, delegates should be able to:

• Recognise why asbestos is dangerous
• Know the different types of asbestos and their properties
• Demonstrate a knowledge of asbestos applications: the places and materials in which it is used
• Demonstrate a knowledge of asbestos-related legislation
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the Equipment and Method Sheets contained in HSG210 Asbestos Essentials
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheets for work with asbestos cement (non-licensed)
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheets for working with textured coatings containing asbestos (non-licensed)
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheets for safe work with undamaged asbestos materials
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheet for fly-tipped waste
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheets for strictly controlled minor work on asbestos insulating board (AIB)
• Demonstrate a knowledge of the HSG210 task sheets for removal and replacement of other asbestos containing materials

Practical Training

The course includes a practical element, with hands-on practice of procedures in a simulated environment. For example:

• Carrying out decontamination procedures as detailed in EM8
• Trying out RPE to ensure a good face fit, and knowing how to carry out maintenance checks
• Use of wetting techniques and H-type vacuums
• Bagging of waste

Certification

Each learner individually completes a timed, invigilated, closed-book written examination at the end of the course. The pass mark is 80%. On successful completion, delegates are issued with an IATP certificate which is valid for 12 months, after which the IATP Non-Licensed Asbestos Works Refresher course can be taken.
