Spot Phishing and Scam Messages Before They Cause Harm
This online awareness course helps staff recognise phishing and social engineering across email, text, phone, QR codes, messaging apps and social media. It is designed for anyone who receives workplace messages, handles information, or can approve payments or account changes.
Learners practise checking senders and context, verifying requests through trusted routes and reporting quickly, including what to do after a mistake. The course introduces a simple STOP-CHECK-VERIFY-REPORT-LEARN habit and draws on NCSC framing.
Who Is This Course For?
- Anyone who receives workplace emails, texts or calls
- Staff who handle personal or business information
- People who can approve payments or account changes
- Non-specialist staff with no security background
- New starters (induction) and staff needing refresher training
Delivery Method
Online e-learning, self-paced, on desktop or mobile, with about 2 hours of video supported by PDF, PPT and infographic resources. Lifetime access is included.
What the Course Covers
- Why phishing works – what phishing is, why convincing messages look professional and how to notice pressure before acting.
- Suspicious emails and impersonation – checking sender and context rather than appearance, and verifying via known contact details.
- Smishing, QR and social media scams – lures by text, QR code, messaging apps and social media, and pausing before shortened links.
- Vishing and social engineering – phone-based impersonation, how urgency and authority create pressure, and calling back on trusted numbers.
- Malicious links and credential theft – avoiding unexpected links and attachments, recognising fake sign-in pages and what to do after clicking or sharing credentials.
- Business email compromise and payment fraud – high-risk financial and data requests, and why an email thread is not proof of identity.
- Safe response and reporting – reporting through official routes, telling your organisation quickly and protective steps after a mistake.
- Phishing-resilient habits – the STOP-CHECK-VERIFY-REPORT-LEARN habit, speaking up about near misses and reviewing public personal information.
