Rescue 3 – Safe Working Near Water (SWNW) in Exeter, Devon (Classroom)

Course Overview

A one-day Rescue 3 course for people who work near water, wear lifejackets and are not expected to go into the water on purpose. It covers the right PPE and simple rescue techniques, so delegates can rescue themselves and their co-workers safely.

Who Is It For?

Anyone working near water, including Environment Agency, SEPA and Natural Resources Wales staff, construction workers and road and bridge crews. Delegates must be at least 18 and confident swimmers.

Course Programme

• About Rescue 3, workplace legislation and safe systems of work
• Risk assessment and planning for emergencies
• Water hazards, cold water, and mud, ice and coastal considerations
• Biosecurity, environmental, medical and decontamination considerations
• Choosing lifejackets and PPE
• Lifejacket maintenance, inspection, transport and pre- and post-use checks
• Lifejacket firing mechanisms, inflation and deflation, and accidental inflation risks
• Swimming and self-rescue in a lifejacket
• Throw bags and other conditional rescues
• Getting out of the water

Certification

Successful delegates receive a Rescue 3 certificate at awareness level. Requalification is needed every three years.
