Recognise the Signs of Sepsis and Escalate Without Delay
This online sepsis awareness course explains what sepsis is, how it differs from infection and how to recognise the early and serious signs of deterioration. It is for anyone in health and social care who may meet a person with an infection or signs of clinical deterioration.
Learners look at risk factors, knowing a person's normal baseline, soft signs and red flags, and how NEWS2 supports assessment, before putting it together as recognise, respond, escalate, communicate and document.
Who Is This Course For?
- Anyone working in health and social care
- Care and healthcare staff who may meet a person with an infection
- Staff who need to recognise and escalate signs of clinical deterioration
Delivery Method
Online e-learning, self-paced, so learners can study at a time that suits them on desktop or mobile. The course includes about 2 hours of video, supported by PDF, PowerPoint and infographic resources, with lifetime access.
What the Course Covers
- Sepsis and infection – what sepsis is, how it differs from infection and how infection can become systemic, including that sepsis can occur without a high temperature
- Risk factors and baseline – common risk factors, who needs closer observation, and noticing changes from a person's normal appetite, mobility, alertness and behaviour
- Soft signs and early deterioration – subtle signs such as new confusion, unusual tiredness and reduced mobility, and why tracking trends and recording objective observations matters
- Sepsis red flags – signs of serious deterioration including breathing and consciousness changes, severe weakness, reduced urine output and circulation or skin changes
- NEWS2 and escalation – what NEWS2 is and its key observations, and when and how to escalate and communicate objectively
- Responding safely – responding to suspected deterioration, following workplace escalation procedures, accurate recording and review
