IELTS Preparation and English Online Courses from the Co-creator of IELTS

The British Council is one of the three organisations behind the IELTS test itself, which makes its preparation courses unusual: the teaching comes from the same source as the exam. Three online products sit here — IELTS Coach in three package sizes, a flexible English course with live classes, and a self-study subscription. All are delivered online and available internationally rather than only in the UK.

IELTS Coach Online — three packages
IELTS Coach comes as Express, Light or Intensive, so the commitment scales to how far you are from your target band. Each includes a personal needs analysis with an expert, a teacher-led webinar, and a mix of group and private classes drawn against credits — 55-minute group sessions or 25-minute one-to-ones. Access runs for three months, which is the realistic window for moving a band score rather than cramming.
What the IELTS preparation covers
Both Academic and General Training routes, across all four sections — listening, reading, writing and speaking — with the grammar and vocabulary work underneath. Beyond the language itself it covers test awareness: the format, the question types, and the strategies that stop people losing marks they could have kept. Choosing the wrong route is a common and expensive mistake, since Academic and General Training serve different purposes — university entry against migration and work.
English Online — flexible and self-study
Two general English subscriptions rather than exam preparation. The Flexible English Online Course includes live teacher-led classes; the Self-study Course runs at your own pace without them. Both are for building general proficiency rather than targeting a band score — useful if the exam is some way off, or not the goal at all. Browse all language courses.
Which should you take?
If you have a test date and a target band, IELTS Coach is the one — it is built around the exam rather than around general fluency, and the needs analysis at the start tells you which sections are actually costing you marks. If the test is months away or your English needs broader work first, the flexible or self-study courses build the underlying level more economically. Doing general English when the exam is six weeks out is the usual misallocation.

Courses are delivered and booked on the British Council's own platform. Visit the British Council website for full details or to book.
