The two get used interchangeably and they are genuinely different products. Buying the wrong one wastes either money or several months.

Before you enrol

A distance qualification is a commitment rather than a purchase. Four things are worth establishing before you commit somebody to one.

The real time commitment

Listings state guided learning hours, which is the study time rather than the elapsed time. A qualification quoted at 150 hours realistically takes several months alongside a full-time job. Set expectations with the candidate before enrolment, not at the first deadline.

Entry requirements

Higher-level qualifications frequently require existing certification or documented experience — NVQs in particular assume you are already doing the job at the level being assessed. Check the prerequisites on the course page rather than after enrolment.

How it is assessed

Written assignments, a portfolio of workplace evidence, an invigilated examination, or a combination. Where an exam must be sat at a centre or booked separately, that is an additional arrangement and sometimes an additional cost. The listing states it.

The enrolment window

Most providers set a period within which the qualification must be completed, and some charge to extend it. If the candidate has a demanding year ahead, check the window and the extension terms before enrolling rather than requesting an extension later.

NVQs and portfolio qualifications

A large share of the distance learning listed here is NVQ and portfolio-based, which works differently again. You are not studying a syllabus so much as evidencing that you already perform the role competently — photographs, site records, witness testimony and professional discussion, gathered over time and assessed against the standard.

That makes them well suited to experienced people who need the qualification for a card or a contract requirement, and poorly suited to anyone not currently doing the work. An assessor will need access to your evidence, and in some cases to your workplace.

Construction NVQs are frequently the route to a CSCS card at supervisor or manager level. Where a specific card is the objective, tell us which one before enrolling — the qualification has to match the card, and the two are easy to mismatch.
