Why the accreditation matters
The Chartered Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors is the professional body for ergonomics in the UK. A CIEHF-accredited course carries weight that a generic DSE session does not, which matters if assessments are ever scrutinised — after a musculoskeletal claim, for instance, or during an HSE inspection.
What the law requires
The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations require employers to assess workstations for DSE users, reduce identified risks, and repeat the assessment when the workstation or the user's circumstances change. Home working has widened that duty considerably — a kitchen table is a workstation if someone works there regularly.
Internal assessor or external consultant?
For an organisation with more than a handful of DSE users, training an internal assessor usually costs less than commissioning individual assessments and produces faster responses. Someone in house can reassess after a desk move or a new starter without arranging a visit. External consultants remain useful for complex cases — significant musculoskeletal problems, disability adjustments or contested claims.
