UCAT Preparation for Medical and Dental School Applicants
The Medic Portal provides preparation for the UCAT — the University Clinical Aptitude Test used by most UK medical and dental schools as part of the admissions process. The test is unlike school examinations: it measures reasoning under severe time pressure rather than subject knowledge, which is precisely why structured preparation makes a measurable difference.

Preparation covering the UCAT subtests — verbal reasoning, decision making, quantitative reasoning and situational judgement. The challenge in each is pace rather than difficulty: the questions are answerable, but the time allowed per question is short enough that technique and familiarity matter as much as ability.
Why prepare at all?
UCAT scores carry real weight in admissions, and many medical schools apply a threshold below which an application does not progress regardless of grades. Because the format is unfamiliar and the timing severe, most candidates improve substantially between an untimed first attempt and a prepared one. That improvement is largely technique, not intelligence.
When to sit it
The UCAT is taken in the summer before applying, with results available immediately and used in that year's application cycle. It cannot be retaken within the same cycle, so there is one attempt per application year. That makes preparation timing important — leaving it late removes the option of practising properly.
Is preparation worth the cost?
That depends on how much the application matters and where you currently score. If a practice test already puts you comfortably above your target schools' thresholds, structured preparation adds less. If you are near a threshold, or unfamiliar with the format, the score improvement can be the difference between an application progressing and not.
