Smart Awards Telecoms, Overhead and Underground Training in Accrington
Utilities Training delivers Smart Awards qualifications from Accrington — the scheme used across telecoms and utilities for overhead pole and ladder work, underground safety, and service location. It is a distinct qualification family from CITB or NRSWA, and one that fibre and telecoms contractors specifically need rather than general construction cards.
Overhead and pole work
Smart Awards SA001 Overhead Safety Ladders, Poles & JUPs — covering safe working on telecoms poles, ladder use against poles, and joint use poles shared with electricity distribution. Joint use in particular carries risks that general ladder training does not address.
Underground and civils
SA002 Underground Safety for work in chambers and footway boxes, SA006 Safe Working in Civils, and SA022 Track and Locate Underground Services. Striking a buried service is among the most serious risks in this work, and competent location is what prevents it.
Roof and ladder access
SA051c TETRA Leaning Ladder & Flat Roof Training — covering ladder access to roofs and safe working on flat roof areas, relevant where telecoms equipment is roof-mounted. Browse all
working at height courses.
Powered access and streetworks
IPAF Dual 3a & 3b, and IPAF 1b & 1b+ for vehicle mounted or push around platforms. Plus NRSWA Signing, Lighting & Guarding (O1/Unit 2) for operatives working in the highway. See all
NRSWA courses.
Why Smart Awards rather than CITB?
Smart Awards is the qualification family recognised across telecoms and utilities, where the work is poles, chambers and cabinets rather than construction sites. Openreach and its contractors, along with much of the fibre supply chain, specify Smart Awards units. A CSCS card will not substitute — check what your client's contract actually names before booking.
