Use AI Tools Safely and Effectively at Work
This introductory online course explains what workplace and generative AI tools can and cannot do, and how to use them responsibly. It helps employees, managers and organisations introducing AI tools to get useful results while protecting data and keeping human judgement in charge.
Topics run from writing clear prompts and checking outputs for accuracy and hallucinations through to data protection, bias, transparency and human oversight. The course cites the Skills England AI foundation skills benchmark as curriculum evidence.
Who Is This Course For?
- Employees and workers using AI tools in their roles
- Supervisors and team leaders
- Managers responsible for how AI is used
- Other workplace users in UK organisations
- Anyone wanting a foundation-level, non-technical introduction to workplace AI
Delivery Method
Online e-learning, self-paced, on desktop or mobile, with about 2 hours of video supported by PDF, PPT and infographic resources. Lifetime access is included.
What the Course Covers
- What AI is and its limits – what workplace and generative AI can help with, common limits such as inaccurate or made-up output, and why human judgement is still needed.
- Practical workplace uses – which routine tasks suit AI, when specialist review is needed, and why unchecked output should not be presented as final.
- Writing clear prompts – using context, constraints and output format, and spotting instructions too vague to give reliable results.
- Improving outputs – refining results with follow-up instructions, adjusting tone and length, and knowing when to use other sources.
- Accuracy and hallucinations – checking important information against original or authoritative sources and recognising misleading confidence.
- Data protection and cyber security – personal-data versus confidentiality risks, data minimisation, prompt injection, data exposure and using only authorised tools.
- Bias, fairness and transparency – recognising uneven or biased outputs and escalating discriminatory or unexplained outcomes.
- Human oversight and accountability – meaningful oversight, organisational approvals, escalation routes and how accountability depends on role, organisation and applicable law or policy.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, learners will be able to:
- Explain what AI tools can help with and where their limits lie
- Identify routine workplace tasks that AI may support
- Write clear prompts using context, constraints and output format
- Check AI output for accuracy and recognise hallucinations
- Identify data protection, confidentiality and cyber security risks when using AI
- Recognise biased or unfair outputs and know when to escalate
- Describe the role of human oversight and accountability in safe AI adoption
- Use a proportionate pause, check and escalate approach when the risk is material
Assessment and Certification
The course ends with a 15-question multiple-choice assessment with a pass mark of 80% (12 out of 15). Learners who complete the course and pass the final assessment receive a certificate of completion. The course awards 2 CPD points and is delivered by a CPD Accredited Provider. The certificate records course completion only; it does not by itself demonstrate professional competence, statutory compliance, government approval, AI Skills Boost approval or accreditation.
Important to Know
This is an introductory, awareness-level course. It does not cover coding or machine-learning development, and prompting is taught at foundation level only, not advanced prompt engineering. Data protection and cyber security are covered at awareness level only. The course does not replace your employer's AI policies, legal advice, data-protection advice, cyber-security controls or role-specific responsibilities.
