This CABWI NRSWA for Supervisor LA S1 to S5 & S7 course of training and assessment is designed for Supervisors and Managers who need to monitor works in line with the national standards for the reinstatement and openings within the high-way and safety at Street works and Road works Code of Practice.

Course Aims

To provide Supervisors and Managers with the operational knowledge required to effectively monitor street works operations, in line with the requirements of the New Roads and Street works Act 1991 and associated codes of practice. Supervisors and Managers will have demonstrated their ability to monitor Street working actives in line with standards and codes of practice. Certification for successful Candidates will be awarded by CABWI and registered with SWQR.

Course Outline

    • Introduction, aims and objectives
    • Duties and responsibilities of operatives and supervisors within the Street works Act
    • Selection and suitability of personal protective equipment

    LA: Location and avoidance of underground apparatus

    • Interpret plans showing location of underground apparatus
    • Identify types of underground apparatus encountered during excavation
    • Implications of damage to apparatus
    • Identify risks of, and implications of, damage to underground apparatus
    • Use pipe and cable location equipment

    S1: Monitoring signing, lighting and guarding

    • Monitor a work site survey
    • Monitor site safety
    • Monitor action taken to protect pedestrians, vehicular traffic and site personnel
    • Monitor provision of portable traffic signals

    S2: Monitoring excavation in the highway

    • Monitor excavation work in the highway
    • Monitor action taken to avoid damage to underground apparatus during excavation
    • Monitor selection, disposal and storage for re-use of excavated material
    • Monitoring site safety

    S3: Monitoring reinstatement and compaction of backfill materials

    • Monitor selection and storage of backfill materials in carriageway and foot-way reinstatement
    • Monitor selection of plant for compaction of backfill material
    • Monitor construction of backfill layer
    • Monitor action taken to avoid damage to underground apparatus during backfill operations
    • Monitor site safety

    S4: Monitoring reinstatement of sub-base and base (road base) in non-bituminous materials

    • Monitor selection of non-bituminous materials for use in the carriageway and footway reinstatement
    • Monitor selection of plant used for compaction of sub-base and base (road base) materials
    • Monitor construction of sub-base and base (road base) materials

    S5: Monitoring reinstatement in bituminous materials

    • Monitor selection of bituminous materials for use in flexible carriageway and footway reinstatement
    • Monitor selection of plant for use in the compaction of bituminous materials
    • Monitor construction of flexible base (road base) and surface layers

    S7: Monitoring reinstatement of Modular surfaces and concrete footways

    • Monitor reinstatement of concrete blocks (carriageway / footway)
    • Monitor reinstatement of concrete slabs in footways
    • Monitor reinstatement of concrete footways
