Renew your SWQR card before it expires

This one-day CABWI New Roads and Street Works Act (NRSWA) reassessment is for operatives and supervisors whose SWQR card is coming up for renewal. Rather than repeating the five-day foundation course, you are reassessed on the street works units you already hold so your qualification can stay current on the register.

The course is delivered in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire by Safeteam Training Group, a CITB Approved Training Organisation with its head office in Raunds, Northamptonshire.

Who Should Attend the NRSWA Reassessment?

The reassessment is for current SWQR card holders, operatives or supervisors, whose card is due to expire. If you have never attended NRSWA training, or your last training was more than five years ago, you need the full NRSWA for Operatives or NRSWA for Supervisors foundation course instead.

Under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, street works in the public highway must be supervised by a person holding the supervisor qualification, with at least one qualified operative on site at all times while the work is in progress. NRSWA training covers the work involved – traffic management, utility installation, excavation and utility repair – and is assessed by CABWI (the Certified Awarding Body for the Water Industry), with qualifications recorded on the Street Works Qualifications Register (SWQR).

Course Details

  • Duration: 1 day
  • Delivery: Classroom training in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, HP22 4AD
  • Awarding body: CABWI
  • Outcome: a certificate for each unit passed and a renewed SWQR card

Which Units Are Reassessed?

You are reassessed on the units already recorded against your card. For operatives these are drawn from LA and O1 to O8; for supervisors, from LA and S1 to S7 – covering location and avoidance of underground apparatus, signing, lighting and guarding, excavation, backfill and reinstatement.

How to Prepare

The reassessment is a check of existing competence rather than a training course, so it pays to refresh your knowledge of the codes of practice that underpin street works beforehand, including:

  • Safety at Street Works and Road Works – A Code of Practice
  • Specification for the Reinstatement of Openings in Highways
  • HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services

Certification and Your SWQR Card

You receive a certificate for each unit you pass, and Safeteam applies for your renewed SWQR card on your behalf. The SWQR holds the details of qualified street works operatives and supervisors and is maintained at the invitation of the Department for Transport.

NRSWA Reassessment FAQs

How long is the NRSWA reassessment?

One day, at the Aylesbury venue.

Can I take the reassessment if my card has already lapsed?

The reassessment is for card holders whose SWQR card is expiring. If you have not attended NRSWA training within the last five years, the foundation course is the route back to a valid card.

Is the reassessment for operatives or supervisors?

Both. You are reassessed on the operative or supervisor units you already hold.

Do I have to apply for my new SWQR card?

No. Safeteam applies for the SWQR card on your behalf once your units are passed.
