Locate buried services before you dig

This one-day CAT and Genny course teaches you to use a cable avoidance tool (CAT) and signal generator (Genny) to locate buried cables and pipes before excavation. Striking an underground service can cause serious injury, costly damage and long delays, so competent use of locating equipment is a basic requirement on most sites where ground is broken.

The course is delivered in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire by Safeteam Training Group, a CITB Approved Training Organisation with its head office in Raunds, Northamptonshire.

Who Is the CAT and Genny Course For?

The course is for groundworkers, utility operatives, plant operators, site supervisors and anyone who digs or breaks ground, or who checks areas before excavation starts. No previous experience is needed.

CAT and Genny FAQs

How long is the CAT and Genny course?

One day at the Wellingborough venue, with a large practical element.

What does the Genny do?

The Genny is a signal generator. It puts a signal onto a buried cable or metallic pipe, or into the ground nearby, so the CAT can trace services that would not otherwise give off a detectable signal.

Will the CAT find every buried service?

No. Plastic pipes without a tracer wire and some other services cannot be detected, which is why the course covers utility records and safe digging practice as well as the equipment.

Do I need any experience?

No. The course is suitable for complete beginners.

Where is the course held?

At Safeteam's training venue in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, NN9 6GR.
