What is a Paediatric First Aid Course?
Paediatric First Aid is a 2-day training course that is designed to provide learners with the knowledge and skills they need to respond effectively to first aid emergencies involving babies and children.
Our Paediatric First Aid course:
- is designed to meet the requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework
- is suitable for nursery staff, childminders, teaching assistants and anyone who works with or cares for babies and children
- is suitable both for learners who require their initial certificate and those renewing their qualification.
The training covers a wide range of first aid emergencies that can affect babies and children, helping learners respond quickly and confidently, as well as recognise when professional medical help is necessary.

What Does Paediatric First Aid Cover?
This 2-day course ensures learners are able to understand, and where relevant, apply the following skills when helping a baby or child. Learners will develop the skills and confidence to help a baby or child who is:
- unresponsive and not breathing, including baby and child CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)
- unresponsive and breathing
- choking
- bleeding
- suffering from shock
- suffering from a burn or scald
- having a seizure
- suffering from an allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis
- suffering from a head, neck or back injury
- suffering from a broken bone, strain or sprain.
The course also includes information on:
- assessing and monitoring a casualty
- common childhood conditions and illnesses
- where and when to get help
- accident recording and reporting.
Learning and Assessment
How are learners assessed?
Learners are continuously evaluated during the course through a variety of hands-on demonstrations, interactive question and answer sessions, quizzes, and engaging activities like role-play. These activities are designed to guide and assist learners in gaining the necessary skills and ensure they can apply their knowledge safely.
How long is a Paediatric First Aid certificate valid for?
Upon successfully completing the course, learners will be awarded a Paediatric First Aid certificate from the British Red Cross. This qualification remains valid for a period of three years.
How long is the Paediatric First Aid course?
The course is delivered over two consecutive days, usually running from 9am to 5pm each day. Learners are asked to arrive in good time to allow for registration; late arrivals may be refused entry to the course.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this course. Learners will need to demonstrate their ability to use the skills covered on the course to receive the Paediatric First Aid qualification.
Suitable for learners over the age of 16.
