Workplace First Aid at Around 150 Centres Across All Four UK Nations

The British Red Cross has been delivering workplace first aid training for more than forty years, and the range here is built on geography: EFAW, First Aid at Work and the FAW requalification each run at roughly 145 to 150 towns, from Inverness and Workington to St Austell and Ryde on the Isle of Wight. Alongside them sit paediatric first aid and fire marshal training at nineteen centres each. This is the broadest classroom network of any provider on the site, and one of very few covering Northern Ireland as well as England, Scotland and Wales.

Emergency First Aid at Work — around 145 towns
EFAW is the one-day qualification covering the immediate life-saving essentials — unresponsive casualties, CPR, choking, bleeding and shock. It runs almost everywhere in the network, and it is the level a first aid needs assessment usually points to for smaller, lower-hazard workplaces. The certificate lasts three years.
First Aid at Work — around 150 towns
FAW is three days, adding injury and illness management to the EFAW content — fractures, burns, head and spinal injuries, and medical conditions including diabetes, asthma, stroke and anaphylaxis. This is the level for higher-risk work, larger headcounts, or sites where an ambulance would take a while. A handful of towns carry FAW without EFAW, including Coventry, Crawley and Crewe.
First Aid at Work Requalification — around 145 towns
FAWR is two days rather than three, and matches the FAW network almost town for town. It is the route for anyone whose certificate is still in date — let it expire and you sit the full three-day course again. Worth diarising a couple of months before the three years are up, because places at the nearest centre go quickly.
Paediatric First Aid — nineteen centres
Paediatric First Aid at Abingdon, Belfast, Birmingham, Cambridge, Canary Wharf, Chelmsford, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Harrow, Leeds, Liverpool, Moorgate, Newcastle, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Salford, Sheffield and Southampton. This is the qualification the EYFS statutory framework requires in early years settings — workplace EFAW or FAW does not satisfy it, because infant and child resuscitation differ materially from adult technique.
Fire Marshal — nineteen centres
Fire Marshal training at Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Canary Wharf, Cardiff, Chelmsford, Derby, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Harrow, Hertford, Moorgate, Newcastle, Northampton, Norwich, Nottingham, Preston, Salford and Southampton. It covers the marshal's role in a sweep and evacuation, extinguisher selection and use, and the duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order. In most workplaces the same few people hold both the fire marshal and first aider roles, so the two are worth booking together. See all fire safety courses.
Wellbeing Support at Work
Wellbeing Support at Work, delivered as e-learning — the one course in the range that needs no travel. It is an awareness-level course covering how to recognise and respond to a colleague in distress, rather than a regulated mental health first aid qualification, so check what your policy actually calls for before treating it as coverage. Coverage across all four nations
Northern Ireland is served from Belfast, Derry / Londonderry and Omagh — uncommon, since most providers on this site stop at the Irish Sea. Scotland runs from Inverness down through Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen-adjacent Angus, the central belt and the borders at Galashiels and Dumfries. Wales covers Abergele, Bridgend, Cardiff, Carmarthen, Swansea, Wrexham and Gwent. England reaches from Workington and Carlisle in the north to St Austell, Torquay and Ryde in the south west and on the Isle of Wight.
EFAW, FAW or requalification — which do you need?
The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations set no headcount rule. They require a first aid needs assessment, and that decides both the level and the number of first aiders. Broadly: EFAW for smaller lower-hazard workplaces, FAW for higher-risk work or larger sites, and FAWR only if you already hold an in-date FAW certificate.
