The ProQual Level 3 Award in Fire Risk Assessment is a regulated qualification mapped to the competence skills and behaviours defined in BS 8674:2025, the built environment framework for individual fire risk assessors. It suits anyone already working in fire safety, moving into the sector, or carrying out fire risk assessments as part of a wider role.

Learners gain a solid grounding in the legislation, principles and procedures behind an effective fire risk assessment, along with the practical confidence to complete assessments and write clear, compliant reports.

Subjects covered
  • Introduction to fire risk assessment
  • Understanding fire development and spread
  • Introduction to managing fire risk

The Award concentrates on low-risk premises — described by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers as buildings that typically hold around 60 occupants.

Who can enrol

You should be working in, or on a training placement that gives you access to, the review of fire risk assessments in a low-risk building — this is essential, as the qualification is evidenced through genuine workplace activity.

Assessment

You evidence your knowledge using several methods: real examples of work from your day-to-day role, a professional discussion with your assessor, and a written question task. An experienced assessor supports you one-to-one from start to finish.

Duration and enrolment

Enrolment is open year-round. Individual pace varies, though ProQual gives a typical guide of 100 hours. After signing up you receive a work pack and an induction with your assessor, who walks you through evidence gathering, the workbook and filing system, and a competence analysis to map your strengths and development areas.

Ideal for

People working in or entering the fire safety field, and anyone undertaking fire risk assessments for low-risk premises who wants regulated, BS 8674:2025-aligned proof of competence.

For short courses a completion certificate is available at the end of the course. You can screenshot this or print it out to confirm completion of the training.

For accredited courses a certificate will be sent directly to you from the appropriate awarding body.
