The ProQual Level 5 Award in Managing the Risk of Fire in High-Risk Buildings is a regulated qualification mapped to the BS 8674:2025 competence framework. It is intended for people who put fire risk controls into practice in high-risk buildings using assessments produced by others — rather than those who write the fire risk assessment themselves.

That focus makes it a strong fit for buildings and facilities managers, or safety practitioners seeking accredited CPD and recognised evidence of competence in managing fire risk across complex premises.

Subjects covered

The Award consists of a single mandatory unit:

  • Managing the Risk of Fire in High-Risk Buildings

High-risk premises are defined by their complexity and hazard level — occupancies above 500, escape travel distances over 60 metres, single stairs, fire spread areas exceeding 1,000 square metres, or multiple and specialised hazards. Examples include high-rise flats, complex commercial units, care homes, hotels and hospitals.

Who can enrol

Entry requires either the ProQual Level 4 Certificate in Fire Risk Assessment, or at least five years' demonstrable occupational experience in the field. You must also hold a role, or be on a training course, that enables you to work with fire risk assessments for low, medium and high-risk buildings in real or realistically simulated settings.

Assessment

Competence is evidenced through several routes: real examples of work from your day-to-day role, written questions to support your knowledge, and a witness testimony from a supervisor or line manager. You have one-to-one assessor support throughout. Note this Award does not include a workplace observation.

Duration and enrolment

You can enrol at any time. Pace varies between learners, with ProQual estimating about 100 hours on average. After signing up you receive a work pack and an induction with your assessor covering evidence gathering, the workbook and filing system, and a competence analysis of your strengths and development areas.

Ideal for

Buildings and facilities managers and safety practitioners who apply fire risk controls in high-risk premises from assessments carried out by others, and who want accredited CPD evidencing BS 8674:2025-aligned competence. It is not designed for those producing the assessment itself.

For short courses a completion certificate is available at the end of the course. You can screenshot this or print it out to confirm completion of the training.

For accredited courses a certificate will be sent directly to you from the appropriate awarding body.
