Find a course by area of London
In London the journey matters as much as the date. Every course on this page names its area in the title, and the exact postcode and a map are on each listing. Start with the part of London that is easiest for you to reach.

First aid and mental health courses in London
First aid is by far the largest group of courses in London, with several national providers running dates in most parts of the capital, so you can usually find a course within a short journey of work or home. The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course suits lower-risk workplaces such as offices and shops. The three-day First Aid at Work course is for higher-risk settings and larger sites; a blended version, with part of the learning completed online first, shortens the time in the classroom.
Both certificates last three years. First Aid at Work holders renew with the two-day Requalification course; Emergency First Aid at Work holders simply repeat the one-day course. Nurseries, childminders and schools need Paediatric First Aid, which meets the Early Years Foundation Stage requirement and runs in London both as a two-day course and in a blended format.
Two-day Mental Health First Aid and the shorter Mental Health Advocate course run at several London venues, as does half-day fire marshal training.

SMSTS, SSSTS and CITB courses in London
The CITB Site Safety Plus range runs in London from several providers, mainly at venues in East and South London. The five-day SMSTS is for site managers, and the two-day SSSTS is for first-line supervisors, gangers and foremen.
Both certificates last five years and must be renewed before they expire: the SMSTS Refresher takes two days and the SSSTS Refresher one. If the certificate lapses, CITB requires the full course again. The one-day Health and Safety Awareness course is the usual route towards the CSCS Labourer card, alongside the CITB health, safety and environment test.
London is also well served for temporary works training. The two-day Temporary Works Coordinator course, the one-day Temporary Works Supervisor course and the one-day Coordinator Refresher all run in the capital, along with SEATS site environmental awareness.
For the national picture see SMSTS courses, SSSTS courses and all CITB courses.
IOSH and NEBOSH courses in London
London has the fullest classroom programme for health and safety qualifications in the country. IOSH Managing Safely runs over three days from many providers, in Central, East, South and West London. It is aimed at managers and supervisors in any sector who are responsible for other people's safety, and is assessed by a short test and a workplace risk assessment project. IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors, a short course for board-level duty holders, also runs in London.
The NEBOSH General Certificate is the step up for anyone moving into a health and safety role, taught over two weeks and leading to the NG1 open-book examination and the NG2 workplace risk assessment. London is one of the few places where the rest of the range runs in the classroom too: the construction certificate, the Certificate in Fire Safety, the Environmental Management Certificate, the HSE Certificate in Process Safety Management, the International General Certificate and the Level 6 NEBOSH National Diploma.
Compare every format, including live online and e-learning, under IOSH courses and NEBOSH courses.
CDM, environmental and site skills courses in London
For designers, clients and contractors, two-day CDM 2015 courses run in Central London and at Heathrow. The ISEP (formerly IEMA) environmental management certificates are available as classroom courses in South London.
Short practical courses run mainly in East London: PASMA Towers for Users, UKATA Asbestos Awareness, CAT and Genny cable avoidance, abrasive wheels, fire warden and spill response training.

Renewing a ticket? Check the date first
SMSTS, SSSTS and PASMA run on five-year cycles and first aid on three, and CITB refreshers can only be taken while the original certificate is still in date. London refresher courses fill quickest in the weeks before popular expiry dates, so check your expiry date and book a month or two ahead.
Common questions about training in London
How do I choose a venue in London?
Start with the journey. Every course title names its area, such as Canary Wharf, Wimbledon or Harrow, and each listing shows the postcode and a map. Use the area guide on this page to open the part of London that suits you, then compare dates and prices there. For multi-day courses such as SMSTS or the NEBOSH General Certificate, a venue with a simple commute is usually worth more than a small difference in price.
Do I need one-day or three-day first aid?
That comes from your first aid needs assessment. Low-risk workplaces with small numbers usually need Emergency First Aid at Work, the one-day course. Higher-risk work, larger headcounts, shift patterns and remote sites point towards the three-day First Aid at Work course. Our first aid needs calculator gives a starting answer in a couple of minutes.
Should I book SMSTS or SSSTS?
It depends on your role, not your trade. SMSTS is for people who manage a site: planning, organising and controlling the work, including site managers, contracts managers and agents. SSSTS is for those who supervise a gang or a section of the work day to day. Most principal contractors in London ask for SMSTS from anyone running a site and SSSTS from every supervisor. Compare SMSTS and SSSTS dates in London.
My SMSTS or SSSTS is about to expire. Can I still take the refresher?
Yes, provided you complete the refresher before the expiry date on your certificate. CITB does not allow a grace period: once the certificate has lapsed you need to retake the full five-day SMSTS or two-day SSSTS. If the London classroom dates are too late, the refreshers also run live online.
Should I drive to a course in London?
Usually not. The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers all London boroughs, with a daily charge for vehicles that do not meet its standards, and the Congestion Charge applies on top in Central London. Parking at central venues is limited and expensive. Almost all London venues are close to a Tube, rail or DLR station, so public transport is normally quicker and cheaper. Venues in outer London are more practical by car, but check the listing first.
Can you run a course at our premises in London?
Yes. Most of the courses on this page can be delivered on site for a group, on dates you choose. It usually becomes cheaper than open-course places at around six to eight delegates, it saves your team the travel time, and the trainer can refer to your own site, plant and procedures. Send the details through the on-site training page for a quote.
