The SSSTS course, or Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme, is a qualification created by CITB to establish a clear industry-wide standard for the management of health and safety on construction sites. An SSSTS qualification is shown in the Approved Code of Practice for construction regulations, it is considered to be a key requirement for anyone who acts in a supervisory role on a construction site.
The SSSTS course is for you if you’re considering, or already have, supervisory responsibilities working on a UK construction site. The course gives you an understanding of the health, safety, welfare and environmental issues on a construction site.
The SSSTS course is intended for those who have, or are about to acquire, supervisory responsibilities. It provides an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues, as well as the legal responsibilities relevant to a construction site supervisors work activities.

Published by CITB, GE706 provides authoritative information on current construction health, safety and environment legislation, guidance and good practice. It is the official supporting publication for the CITB Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS).
Course Agenda
This is a highly interactive course taught through case studies, classroom discussion, group work and individual or group presentations. You will need to do some self-study outside the course.
- The Health and Safety at Work Act
- Specific site issues that challenge supervisors on a daily basis
- Effective toolbox talks
- Supervision of occupational health
- Behavioural safety
- Theory Test – A number of multiple choice and written questions, currently undertaken in Microsoft Forms to maintain the integrity/confidentiality of the exam process. Delegates must score 80% or more to pass.
At the end of the SSSTS course you will be have an understanding of:
- Health and safety law and how it applies to supervisors
- Your supervisory responsibilities in controlling site safely
- Risk assessments and the need for method statements
- Effective site inductions, toolbox talks and method statement briefings
- Monitoring site activities effectively
- Timely intervention when bad practice is identified
Certification
Certification for the SSSTS course is valid for 5 years. To remain certified, you will need to take a SMSTS Refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate.
The following GT700-CS20 will be required for your assessment, most students find it difficult to use the electronic version and maintain the link through zoom. The exercise/assessment is carried out as a toolbox talk and delegates find it easier to use the hard copy this is available from from https://shop.citb.co.uk/ - Please purchase before the course.
Entry Requirements
- To be able to read, write and understand English to a good level.
- You will need to provide a valid ID on the first day of the course, such as a copy of your passport or driving licence
- If you need to re-sit the test, you must do this within 90 days of the original course date at an additional charge
